Spurs’ Chris Paul caps an emotional week in L.A. with a double-double

LOS ANGELES – Professional athletes are viewed as heroes by some fans, but Chris Paul witnessed real ones in action this past week.

“We’ve been seeing the firefighters coming in and out, rotating shifts,” the Spurs point guard said of the first responders staying at the team’s downtown hotel. “Just seeing those true heroes.”

Paul capped an emotional stay in Los Angeles with a 13-point, 10-assist double-double that helped the Spurs overcome an 11-point second quarter deficit to defeat the Lakers 126-102 on Monday while the wildfires that have devastated the area and forced his family to evacuate their home continued to rage.

“It was cool to get my mind off of it a little bit and play,” Paul said

In his first public comments since arriving in Los Angeles with his teammates early Thursday morning, Paul reported that his family is doing well after their emotional experience.

“I think part of it’s became I’m here,” he said. “That’s just the way God works sometimes. And I got a lot of extended family here in LA. I’ve been here for 13 years now, calling this place home. So, it’s been a week for everyone - my family, my extended family and just the people of LA.”

After the game began with a moment of silence for the more than 20 people who have died in the wildfires and the thousands that either lost their homes or were forced to flee like Paul’s family, the Lakers built their double-digit lead before settling for a 62-53 cushion at halftime.

With rookie Stephon Castle pumping in 14 of his 23 points in the third period and Harrison Barnes collecting 10 of his 17 in the fourth quarter, the Spurs won the second half, 73-40, to snap a three-game losing streak and even their record at 19-19.

“They made a ton of shots in the first half,” acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said of Los Angeles. “They were playing really well offensively, but I thought we kind of were just stubborn in our game plan. We did a good job of just staying with it and kind of trusting.”

Victor Wembanyama and Devin Vassell also scored 23 for the Spurs, who were back on the court for the first time since losing at Milwaukee last Wednesday after the NBA postponed their game against the Lakers on Saturday night.

“It has been tough for the guys just being here not knowing if you’re going to play, not knowing really what’s going on,” Paul said. “But I think for us and the Lakers, we were just excited to get a chance to hoop and play and have some sense of normalcy. … It was a really good win for our young team.”

Anthony Davis led the Lakers (20-17) with 30 points and 13 rebounds. LeBron James finished with 18 points and 13 assists.

Here are three takeaways from the final game of a three-game road before the Spurs play two at home against Memphis:

1. Johnson gets high marks for tough situation

In a manner befitting a coach who has studied under Gregg Popovich for several years, the acting Spurs head coach said and did all the right things during the Spurs’ five long days in a city plagued by what many experts are calling the worst conflagration in the nation’s history.

From saying Saturday that any challenge the Spurs faced in L.A. “paled in comparison” to what the victims of the wildfires faced to his heartfelt statement before Monday’s game in which he talked about “the unbelievable level of destruction in this great city,” Johnson hit all the right notes.

The Spurs had to change team hotels on their first day in L.A. and then faced the uncertainty of whether they would even play a game in the reeling city, but Johnson handled everything well, including putting the Spurs through two practices this past weekend and a lengthy film session. At the same time, he reminded them frequently they were in the midst of something “a lot bigger than basketball” and made sure everybody rallied around Chris Paul, whose family was forced to evacuate from their home.

“He handled things as well as you could, communicating with us, the uncertainty,” Paul said. “You’re not sure how hard to practice, how easy to practice. But it was as good as it could be with the uncertainty.”

2. Castle outing a reminder of what’s to come

Collecting another start with Jeremy Sochan out with a tight back, Castle had an impressive offensive performance while also pestering the Lakers with a strong defensive outing that included collecting a pair of steals.

The fourth overall pick connected on 10 of 16 from the field for his 22nd game of 10 or more points and his fifth with 20 or better.

Providing three-level scoring, Castle helped the Spurs win the third quarter 36-27 by scoring 14 points on 6 for 7 from the floor.

Castle might not win the rookie of the year award, but there’s little doubt the Spurs might have snagged a long-term prize from the 2024 draft class.

“He really has a chance to be special and he loves it,” Paul said. “He loves to hoop, loves to play both sides of the ball, and I appreciate that.”

3. Resting Sochan a smart move

The Spurs downgraded Sochan from questionable to out about an hour before the game ensuring that he would miss his third game in the last five outings and second in a row.

Sochan practiced this past weekend, but Johnson indicated the Spurs held him out as a precaution.

“No setback, just a tight back,” Johnson said. “He’s getting better, but we don’t want to rush and we don’t want to deal with it where he is in a game, out for a game, things like that. We want him to be all the way right.”

With Sochan enjoying a career season, it’s a smart move. They’ll need him on the court consistently if they are going to make a push for a berth in the play-in tournament or maybe even an outright playoff berth.
