CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JANUARY 06: Chris Paul #3 of the San Antonio Spurs dribbles up the court against the Chicago Bulls during the second half at the United Center on January 06, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois.

LOS ANGELES - With wildfires encroaching on the hills outside Santa Monica, the Spurs changed hotels Thursday afternoon for “precautionary safety reasons,” a team spokesman said.

The Spurs arrived in Santa Monica around 4 a.m. Thursday after flying into Los Angeles following their game in Milwaukee on Wednesday night. They checked into their team hotel in Santa Monica but relocated to a downtown hotel more than 30 miles away from the wildfires that devastated areas north of Santa Monica.

Smoke could be seen in hills overlooking Santa Monica throughout Thursday.

The Spurs are scheduled to play two games against the Lakers at Crypto.com Arena in downtown L.A. on Saturday and Monday. The NBA postponed the Lakers game against Charlotte scheduled for Thursday night.

“It’s definitely scary, everything that is going on,” Spurs point guard Chris Paul, who has raised his family in L.A. since his days with the Los Angeles Clippers, told reporters after the game in Milwaukee. “I’m sending so much love and prayers to some of my closest friends and family who have lost everything.”

Paul’s wife and two children evacuated their home Tuesday, heading to a hotel in a safer part of Los Angeles.

More than five fires, largely uncontained and fueled by powerful Santa Ana winds gusting to more than 70 mph, have ravaged the area, including wiping out Pacific Palisades north of Santa Monica and sweeping into the Hollywood Hills. Officials have reported at least seven deaths so far.

Fire crews have struggled to gain containment on the over 19,000-acre Palisades Fire, which erupted Tuesday morning and is reportedly is the most destructive wildfire in Los Angeles history.

Santa Monica city leaders on Thursday declared a local state of emergency as the Palisades Fire continued to burn nearby.

Part of the declaration is a potential curfew for all areas within mandatory evacuation zones, lasting from sunset to sunrise as long as the emergency remains in effect, according to a statement from the city, per CBS affiliate KCAL.
