LOS ANGELES – Chris Paul’s family had a tough week. But not nearly as difficult as the one JJ Redick and his clan endured.

With that in mind, Paul came up with an act of kindness to comfort his former Los Angeles Clippers teammate and his two young sons.

Paul capped an emotional five days in Los Angeles with a 13-point, 10-assist double-double that helped the Spurs rally from an 11-point second quarter deficit to defeat the Lakers 126-102 on Monday night as wildfires that devastated the area and forced his family to evacuate their home continued to rage.

“It was cool to get my mind off of it a little bit and play,” Paul said.

Afterward, he turned his attention toward helping Redick.

The first-year Lakers coach and his family were among the thousands in L.A. who suffered severe losses. As of Tuesday, 24 people had died and thousands more had lost their homes.

The Redicks were among the latter. The Pacific Palisades home they rented burned down last week.

“Everything we owned that was of any importance to us in almost 20 years together as a couple and 10 years of parenting was in that house," Redick said. "There are certain things you can’t replace, that will never be replaced.”

Among the cherished items lost in the inferno: Basketball memorabilia collected by Redick’s young sons, Kai and Knox.

Hoping to boost the boys’ spirits, Paul took off his No. 3 jersey after the game, signed it and presented it to them on the court. Victor Wembanyama did the same with his No. 1 jersey.

“You play a lot of years in this league, and some guys are just teammates. JJ is a part of my family,” said Paul, his voice cracking with emotion, of his teammate for four seasons. "Him, his wife, those kids, Knox and Kai.

"I know a lot of people lost family members and homes and stuff like that. It just hits different when people are close to you. Me and JJ are the ultimate competitors, as close as we are, to lose, to win or whatnot. I actually told him today I wanted to do that for his boys. I know how big of basketball fans they are, and it’s just a tough situation, man.”

The gesture touched Redick, who saw his sons break into smiles upon receiving the jerseys.

"They’re huge NBA fans,” he said. “I ran a podcast out of my home for two years, all the players would come through. They would get either a jersey or a card signed. They lost all that… It was nice of them to do it.”

Wembanyama was happy to help out.

“Chris asked me earlier if it was OK for me to do that,” he said. "I didn’t know they were huge fans like this, but JJ is a person I like, and that was directly impacted by this. So, I just knew, if I can make those kid’s days, I’ll do it.”

In his first public comments since arriving in Los Angeles with his teammates last Thursday morning after a game in Milwaukee, Paul reported that his family is doing well after their frightening experience.

“I think part of it’s became I’m here,” he said. “That’s just the way God works sometimes. And I got a lot of extended family here in LA. I’ve been here for 13 years now, calling this place home. So, it’s been a week for everyone – my family, my extended family and just the people of LA.”

Acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson gave a heartfelt statement before the game in support of the city, saying the Spurs’ “thoughts and prayers” were with the “people in the city of Los Angeles, the firefighters and all others participating in the relief efforts.”

“The images and videos of the unbelievable level of destruction of this great city is absolutely heartbreaking and we just hope maybe tonight can be some small slice of normalcy and positive distraction at this time,” Johnson said.

After the game began with a moment of silence for the victims, the Lakers built their double-digit lead before settling for a 62-53 cushion at halftime.

With rookie Stephon Castle pumping in 14 of his 23 points in the third period and Harrison Barnes collecting 10 of his 17 in the fourth quarter, the Spurs won the second half, 73-40, to snap a three-game losing streak and even their record at 19-19. The Lakers (20-17) led 89-86 with 30 seconds left in the third before the Spurs went on a 30-9 run to ice the game.

Wembanyama and Devin Vassell also scored 23 for the Spurs, who were back on the court for the first time since losing at Milwaukee last Wednesday after the NBA postponed their game against the Lakers on Saturday night.

“I think was probably our best game as a collective group, especially offensively,” Johnson said.

The Spurs returned to San Antonio after the game for two games against Memphis, with the first one set for Wednesday night.

“It has been tough for the guys just being here not knowing if you’re going to play, not knowing really what’s going on,” Paul said. “But I think for us and the Lakers, we were just excited to get a chance to hoop and play and have some sense of normalcy. … It was a really good win for our young team.”

Paul, 39, said he received a lot of emotional support from his younger teammates after they learned about his family’s situation.

“Man, them guys been amazing,” he said. “Everybody with our team. Crazy, crazy situation.”

Paul said the Spurs received daily reminders of the life-and-death battle being waged in Los Angeles because they shared their downtown hotel with first responders.

“We’ve been seeing the firefighters coming in and out, rotating shifts,” Paul said. “Just seeing those true heroes.”

On Monday night, for Knox and Kai Redick, Paul was one of them.
