Tre Jones’ injury comes with unfortunate timing for San Antonio Spurs

SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA - DECEMBER 01: Tre Jones #33 of the San Antonio Spurs makes a shot over Keon Ellis #23 of the Sacramento Kings at the buzzer at the end of the first period at Golden 1 Center on December 01, 2024 in Sacramento, California.

PHOENIX – Backup point guard Tre Jones left Sacramento’s Golden1 Center on Sunday with his left arm in a sling.

Such a medical accessory might as well be a part of the Spurs’ newest uniform fad.

The Spurs have not played a single came this season with a completely healthy roster, a trend that appears apt to continue with Jones nursing a shoulder sprain courtesy of a Domantas Sabonis screen.

It marks a return to the injured list for Jones, who was seven games back from a return from a high ankle sprain suffered in the season opener.

“It definitely sucks for Tre,” forward Julian Champagnie said. “He was just getting his rhythm back and getting his feet back under him. Obviously we’re praying for him and want him to come back as soon as possible.”

The timing of Jones’ latest injury was somewhat frustrating for the Spurs. Had he survived the final 8:23 of Sunday’s 127-125 win over the Kings unscathed, Tuesday would have likely marked the team’s long-awaited return to full health.

The club listed Jeremy Sochan as probable for that night’s NBA Cup game in Phoenix, a sign the 21-year-old forward was on pace to make his return after fracturing his left thumb on Nov. 4.

Sochan had missed 13 consecutive games since suffering the injury in a road loss against the Los Angeles Clippers.

“It was tough mentally and physically not playing in games,” Sochan said. “I think the most important thing is we’ve been playing great, and just being there to support my team.”

So far this season, the Spurs have lost 45 player-games to injury. Devin Vassell heads that unfortunate list, having missed 14 contests with a combination of a right foot injury and left knee bone bruise.

Until Jones ran afoul of Sabonis in Sacramento, Sochan was expected to be the final piece remaining to make the Spurs whole.

Despite now missing Jones, the Spurs will not downplay what it will mean to have Sochan back in the fold.

In seven starts, Sochan averaged 15.4 points, 7.7 rebounds and three assists, while remaining his particularly pestering self on the defensive end.

“No matter what numbers Jeremy puts up, he brings a certain level of physicality to the game,” Champagnie said. “He’s like that every night.”

How Sochan will fit into a rotation that has been somewhat rolling remains to be seen.

The Spurs have been bringing Vassell off the bench during his time off the injured list, a process acting coach Mitch Johnson says will continue for the foreseeable future.

Johnson said Sunday he was not yet sure whether Sochan would follow the same path, or return as a full-fledged starter.

“I have no answer for you right now,” Johnson said. “As we’ve always said, the players will tell us. So hopefully it’s good problems to have."

Johnson believes the nature of Sochan’s injury – which did not affect any part of his body that would hamper running – allowed him to stay in good condition during his recovery.

“He’s done a really good job with his body staying in shape,” Johnson said. “So hopefully he’ll hit the ground running here with this soon."

Spurs’ aim to reset 3-point mark

In the Spurs’ past two games against Sacramento, they have combined for 45 3-pointers.

The 22 they registered in a Nov. 11 victory at the Frost Bank Center tied a franchise record. They 23 they buried Sunday at the Golden1 Center broke it.

There is a reason behind the Spurs’ record-setting success from the 3-point line against Sacramento in particular.

“Sacramento does a great job of packing the paint, showing heavy shifts, rotating,” Johnson said. “We did feel if we spaced the right way and moved the ball, we’d be able to have some inside-out rhythm threes.”

The Spurs made half of their 46 attempts in Sunday’s victory.

The 3-point record was bound to fall eventually, as the Spurs have at last joined the rest of the league in hoisting them up.

Heading into Tuesday, the Spurs were averaging 40.4 3-point tries per game, fourth-most in the NBA. Their 14.5 made 3-pointers per game ranks in the top 10.

With Sacramento back on the schedule Friday at the Frost Bank Center, the Spurs’ new 3-point record might not last long.

“We want to break as many records as we can,” Champagnie said. “Just keep it up.”

Cissoko back from Austin run

The Spurs sent second-year forward Sidy Cissoko to Austin for one game of G League action before the start of their two-game road trip.

Cissoko scored 20 points in 29 minutes against the Texas Legends, and then was on the Spurs’ flight to Sacramento on Saturday.

“Any time you have a young player who’s not playing consistent minutes, you try and maximize their development,” Johnson said. “We try to get guys playing in Austin. That’s been a part of the program for years now.”

Cissoko has appeared in eight games at the NBA level this season, averaging 2.9 minutes.
