After false start, San AntonSpurs’ Tre Jones ready to reset his season

Spurs guard Tre Jones arrived at the AmericanAirlines Center in Dallas on Saturday, and he immediately tried to shake off the bad memories and bad juju.

The last time Jones had walked into the building, he hobbled out with a right ankle sprain.

“I tried to put all those vibes to the side,” Jones said after the Spurs lost to the Mavericks 110-93, “and just get out of here healthy.”

Jones at least accomplished that much, surviving his return to the floor after a 12-game layoff no worse for wear.

The next step in Jones’ fifth NBA season? Playing in a game outside of Dallas.

The 24-year-old reserve point guard was injured Oct. 24 in the Spurs’ season opening loss at the Mavericks, when Dereck Lively came crashing into Jones’ lower leg in pursuit of a loose ball.

Jones returned just in time for Saturday’s rematch at the AmericanAirlines Center.

“I’ve had two games played this year and they are both at Dallas,” Jones said. “What are the chances that happens? Bring me home. I just want to play a home game now.”

Jones should get his chance Tuesday, when the Spurs resume NBA Emirates Cup group play against Oklahoma City at the Frost Bank Center.

In the meantime, Jones will look to further chip away the rust accumulated during his 3 ½ weeks of the shelf.

“It was annoying having to be out since the first game,” Jones said. “It’s definitely a false start.”

Jones’ lack of groove was expected and apparent in his 19-minute shift Saturday.

He finished with three points, going 1 of 5 from the field, his lone made basket coming on the first 3-point attempt he saw.

Jones also had four assists and a turnover.

“It kind of felt like the first preseason game,” said Jones, who averaged 10 points and 6.2 assists as a part-time starter last season. “You’ve been out for a while and you’re kind of out of rhythm.”

For players who have been sidelined for an extended time, the first game back can seem a bit like attempting to hop on a treadmill already moving at full speed.

It takes a beat for that player to get his legs under him.

“You almost lower your expectations just to not put too much pressure on him,” acting coach Mitch Johnson said. “You just want to get that first one out of the way.”

Rusty or not, the Spurs were just glad to have Jones back in the fold as they inch back toward full health.

They faced the Mavericks without all-everything center Victor Wembanyama, out with a knee contusion suffered a night earlier against the Los Angeles Lakers, as well as second-leading scorer Devin Vassell. The fifth-year guard has not yet been cleared to play in back-to-backs in his recovery from offseason foot surgery.

Vassell is expected to play against the Thunder, while the club harbors optimism Wembanyama will be good to go as well.

With Jeremy Sochan out for the foreseeable future after fracturing his left thumb earlier this month, the Spurs are still weeks away from potentially fielding their full rotation.

“The game is easier when we’re fully healthy,” said center Zach Collins, who drew his first start of the season in place of Wembanyama and scored a season-high 20 points. “Rotations are cleaner. That’s just what we’re used to playing with.”

Jones’ return will help in that regard, stabilizing a second unit that had been relying on third-year guards Blake Wesley and Malaki Branham for the bulk of its ball handling.

“He’s one of those guys who has been here for a while,” Johnson said of the 2020 second-round pick from Duke. “He understands some of the things that we’re trying to build upon. Having him back will be kind of a settling presence for us.”

Collins, who should accompany Jones on the bench group once Wembanyama returns, agreed with his coach.

“We missed Tre a lot,” Collins said. “Tre is a winner. To have him back, it was a level of comfort and confidence for us.”

The 6-foot-1 Jones, meanwhile, is looking to re-start a season he entered with so much to prove.

He is in the final year of a contract that will pay him $9.1 million this season. Each night, he is auditioning for a further role with the Spurs as they continue to build around Wembanyama, as well as for other teams should that not work out.

For now, Jones has achieved the first goal in his comeback from the injured list. He played another game in Dallas and lived to tell the tale.

Now he is ready to play an NBA game literally anywhere else.

“That’s probably the most games in a row I’ve ever missed,” Jones said. “It’s definitely frustrating, but I’m just happy to be back. I’m hoping the next game I feel even better.”
