Given he’s missed a career-high 18 games this season due to two separate injuries, Tre Jones didn’t dispute a reporter’s theory that there could be a tormentor out there poking a voodoo doll in his likeness.
“I know,” the backup Spurs point guard said Wednesday. “I feel like I’m being tested. But it’s all right. We’ll be good from here on out. Knock on something.”
Jones’ latest stab at staying healthy is expected to begin Thursday night at home against Atlanta after a team spokesman said after practice he has been cleared to play after missing the last six games with a sprained left shoulder sustained in a win over Sacramento Dec. 1.
Jones has played in just eight of the Spurs’ 26 games. He missed 12 after suffering a sprained right ankle in the season-opening loss at Dallas.
“I’ve never sat out this much in this season before, so it’s definitely been tough,” said Jones, who the Spurs drafted in the second round out of Duke in 2020. “But the guys have kept my spirits up. My family at home have kept my spirits up.”
With the Spurs (13-13) sitting in 11th place in the Western Conference entering play Wednesday, Jones, 24, is eager to return to the fray in the hopes of helping the Spurs end a franchise-worst five-year playoff drought.
“We feel like we’re in a great position right now,” Jones said of a club that won 22 games in each of the last two seasons.
“We haven’t been necessarily healthy this year either yet, so hopefully we can maintain our health moving forward and we can continue to build. We’ve been throwing out a lot of different lineups and that can work to your advantage when guys are knowing that their name is going to be called. But, at the same time, we want to be able to kind of settle into our roles and what we expected coming into the season and be healthy.”
The status of Zach Collins (bruised lower back) and Keldon Johnson (left calf strain) remains uncertain. The two reserves sat out the last two games.
But the Spurs will take what they can get in a season in which just three players have been active every game: Harrison Barnes, Julian Champagnie and Chris Paul.
“Tre gives us a lot depth at the point guard position,” Barnes said. “He’s had a couple of tough breaks, but he’s been working extremely hard, so it’s good to have him back.”
