With Jeremy Sochan healing, San Antonio Spurs could field full roster

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Injured Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan joined 5-on-5 workouts before the team departed for the two-game road trip that begins Sunday in Sacramento.

That was the second surest sign he is the 21-year-old firebrand is nearing a return from a left thumb fracture.

The surest sign was what happened during the scrimmage.

“He got into it with somebody a little bit,” point guard Tre Jones said, declining to name names. “Classic Jeremy.”

There is optimism within the organization Sochan might play his first game since Nov. 4 either at Sacramento or Tuesday at Phoenix.

If and when that happens, the Spurs will – knock on hardwood – get to sport a fully healthy roster for the first time this season.

“We’re excited for that,” guard Devin Vassell said. “One hundred percent.”

Vassell made his return from a left knee bone bruise in Wednesday’s loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

He is expected to come off the bench for short bursts as he ramps up to full capacity. It is possible Sochan sees the same treatment when he finally returns to the floor.

With Jones having missed 12 games himself with a high ankle sprain, he found himself in unfamiliar territory once Vassell entered the game against the Lakers.

“I think that was my first game with him since March,” Jones said. “It was good to play with him again.”

Jones acknowledges he hasn’t quite been at full strength since returning to the floor Nov. 16 in Dallas.

“With a high ankle sprain, there’s just like some muscle tightness and soreness that you’ve just kind of got to work through,” Jones said. “With the schedule we’ve had, it is kind of tough to really get it back to 100%.”

Team wise, the next step in getting to 100% would be to welcome back Sochan.

The 6-foot-8 forward was off to a stellar start to the season, averaging 15.4 points and 7.7 rebounds before injuring his thumb against the L.A. Clippers.

“He gives us some things that you don’t really find around the entire NBA,” Jones said. “So we’ll definitely be happy to have him back.”

Spurs embrace road tests

The Spurs’ opening schedule has been particularly home-heavy, with a league-low seven games on the road so far.

The upcoming trip to Sacramento and Phoenix will give the Spurs a chance to see if they know how to win anywhere else but Utah.

The Spurs are 2-5 away from home this season, with both victories coming in Salt Lake City.

“I think every game is a new test for us, just trying to figure out how to play,” point guard Chris Paul said.

The road will get tougher moving forward for the Spurs, who have played nine of their past 11 games at the Frost Bank Center.

Three of the Spurs’ road games have not required travel outside Texas (two in Dallas, one in Houston). Only three of them (two in Utah, one in LA) have been played outside the central time zone.

“The thing is to understand on the road, it’s always a lot of fun,” Paul said. “It’s just you and your crew. You can’t rely on the crowd or nothing.”

NBA Cup path clear

Oklahoma City’s 101-93 victory over the Lakers on Tuesday made the Spurs’ scenarios for winning their Emirates NBA Cup group as simple as possible.

Win, and they’re in.

The Spurs will enter Tuesday’s final night of pool play games in a three-way tie with Phoenix and OKC at 2-1 atop West Group B.

If the Spurs prevail in Phoenix on Tuesday, they win the group and will advance to the knockout rounds due to a head-to-head tiebreaker with the Thunder.
