3 takeaways as Spurs’ slow start leads to loss vs. Lakers

A hard shoulder check by D’Angelo Russell against Chris Paul late in the first period Wednesday night drew the ire of the Spurs fans in a sellout crowd of 19,120 at the Frost Bank Center.
But after Paul let Russell know he didn’t care for the move, nothing more came of it.
But a case can be made that the hit underscored how much more aggressive and physical the Lakers were than the home team in the second night of a back-to-back for both clubs.
Rookie Dalton Knecht scored 20 points, Anthony Davis added 19 points and 14 rebounds and LeBron James had a 16-point, 10-rebound, 11-assist triple-double as the Lakers ended the Spurs’ four-game winning streak with a 119-101 win.
The Lakers winning the first period 32-23 set the tone for a game that had only three lead changes and one tie.
“Our physicality and just conviction, I guess, at the start of the game weren’t there and that was disappointing, especially against an opponent that is not going to give you anything,” Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson said.
Victor Wembanyama, who led the Spurs with 20 points and 10 rebounds, agreed with Johnson’s assessment.
“We lacked physicality, even though I know the engagement and the will to do good were there,” Wembanyama said. “I think maybe we didn’t focus on the right things, on getting easy baskets and doing the right play. This is something collectively, and also myself, we could focus more. Because without our basis, our youth shows, and our opponent’s experience shows even more.”

Collecting plenty of easy back-door baskets against their sluggish foe, the Lakers outscored the Spurs 58-41 in the paint.
“We didn’t have the right mindset, and we didn’t play with enough force to play the sound basketball that we’ve been playing,” said Harrison Barnes, who had 19 points for the Spurs.
Trailing by 15 in the second quarter, the Spurs fought back to pull within four midway through the third quarter. But a 10-3 run by the Lakers fueled by eight points from Max Christie pushed the visitor’s lead up to 19 points late in the period.
The Lakers led by 10 or more points the rest of the way in improving to 11-7 and pushing their lead in the season series to 2-0 with two games left.
Julian Champagnie added 18 for the Spurs, and Devin Vassell returned after a five-game absence due to a bruised left knee to score 14 in 21 minutes.
Here are three takeaways from loss, which dropped the Spurs to 10-9:
1. Vassell maintains perspective in the face of adversity
With his foot injury last season, the surgery in June to heal it, and a bruised knee that sidelined him for the past couple of weeks, it’s been a star-crossed year so far for the fifth-year guard.
To his credit, he’s fought back from all of it and showed little rust on the offensive end Wednesday night in his return, connecting on 5 for 10 from the field, including 2 for 3 from 3-point range.
“He looked good,” Johnson said. “Again, we know Devin’s going to be able to score and help us out and continue to find his rhythm and it’s nice to have him on the court. We just need to continue to build him back into the fabric of the team. I don’t think it’ll take long.”
Despite all the adversity he’s faced, Vassell’s spirits remain high.
“I’m trying to look everything as a positive way,” he said. “I feel like everything happens for a reason. Obviously I can get upset and get frustrated, but what’s that going to do for me?”
Vassell believes there’s plenty of time left for him to turn his season around.
“I feel like I’ll catch my stride at the perfect time,” he said. “It’s still early for us, and as I keep playing, start playing a lot more, I think I’ll start catching the flow, catching my rhythm a lot better. And I’m excited for us to get Jeremy (Sochan) back. I’m excited for us to have our…what is our starting five even going to look like? We haven’t even played with it. So, I’m excited for that.”
2. Spurs could have used Sochan’s energy
In his first interview with the media since he had surgery on his fractured left thumb three weeks ago, Sochan said before Wednesday’s game that it could be a matter of “days” before he returns.
“I’ve been wanting to play since last week,” he said.
The Spurs could have used him against the Lakers.
Stephon Castle (5) of the San Antonio Spurs and Cam Reddish (5) of the Los Angeles Lakers battle for the ball during the second quarter at Frost Bank Center on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas.
“No matter what numbers Jeremy puts up, whether it’s in the twenties or two, he brings a certain level of physicality to the game, a certain level of nasty, as Pop (Gregg Popovich) would say,” Champagnie said. "And any team needs that, and we especially need that. There’s no nights where he’s not being nasty, he’s not getting on the floor, he is not getting rebounds, he’s not playing hard.
“It’s personal for him, and that’s going to push everybody to do the same exact thing that he’s doing. Definitely a big Energizer bunny for us.”
3. The bench failed to deliver
In addition Christie’s 12 points, the Lakers also benefited from Russell’s 17 points off the bench.
Other than Vassell, the Spurs didn’t get much from their reserves, including Keldon Johnson, who had his worst game of the season with a season-low four points on 1-for-5 from the field and a minus-21 rating.
Tre Jones (two points) and Zach Collins (four points) also had disappointing outings.
