Spurs’ Jeremy Sochan begins recovery after surgery

Jeremy Sochan did not make the trip with the team from Los Angeles to Houston after Monday’s loss to the Clippers, instead flying directly home to San Antonio for surgery on his broken hand.
Sochan’s absence has already been felt. The Spurs have been outscored by 44 points in the six quarters since Sochan exited Monday’s game at halftime.
“His defense has been elite,” acting head coach Mitch Johnson said. “His energy has been ridiculous. When you look at his rebounding, his activity, his toughness, his competitiveness, he’s been awesome for us. We’re going to miss him tremendously.”

Sochan had opened his third NBA season averaging 15.4 points, 7.7 rebounds and three assists, ranking second on the team in all three categories.
Spurs players understand they will have trouble replacing that production all at once.
“We’re not getting him back tomorrow, so we have to figure it out,” forward Julian Champagnie said. “Jeremy is a guy who brings a lot of toughness to our team, a lot of gritty stuff. Teams need guys like that.”
