Why Spurs’ Stephon Castle refuses to play it safe on defensive end

San Antonio Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson slaps hands with guard Stephon Castle (5) as he walks to the bench after fouling out of Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals against the Minnesota Timberwolves at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Monday, May 4, 2026. The Spurs fell 104-102 to the Timberwolves.
Spurs guard Stephon Castle vowed to remain aggressive defensively despite fouling out of the last two playoff games and apparently being.
“Other teams are playing as physical as us, I feel like,” Castle said after Tuesday’s film session. “Sometimes the calls just don’t go our way, but I can’t change who I am defensively just based on how the refs are calling the game. It’s frustrating.”
Castle fouled out of the 114-95 win over Portland in Game 5 last week with the Spurs up by 12 with 4:36 left in the game. In the Spurs’ 104-102 loss to Minnesota on Monday, he fouled out with the Spurs trailing by six with 3:20 remaining.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said it’s hard for the 2025 NBA Rookie of the Year not to accumulate fouls considering he’s always tasked with defending the opponent’s top scorer.

“The way we want him to play, he’s probably staring at four to five fouls every game in these playoffs just because of who he’s guarding,” Johnson said.
Still, Castle believes he’s not being allowed to be as physical as other players.
“They have a lot of good one-on-one scorers,” he said of the Timberwolves. “So me not being able to be physical on them is just putting us at a instant disadvantage. I don’t know really what else to do other than just be playing how I’ve been playing. But hopefully they call it even.”
