Whether defending Jaren Jackson Jr. in Tuesday’s 106-105 loss at Memphis or guarding Luka Doncic in the 107-91 win over the Lakers on Wednesday, the 2025 NBA Rookie of the Year tried to remain at full speed despite being plagued by fouls.
“It’s tough,” Castle said of walking the line between going hard and not fouling out, which he did with 3:13 left against Memphis. Against the Lakers, he picked up his fourth foul with 1:46 left in the third and his fifth 1:38 into the fourth.
“(It’s) especially (tough) playing against a guy like Luka that can kind of manipulate that, knowing how many fouls the defender has and kind of baiting that a little bit,” Castle said. “But I feel like my aggression on the ball kind of feeds towards the rest of the team. So whether I got four fouls, three fouls coming into halftime, I feel like my aggressiveness on defense can’t really change.”
Despite having to chase Doncic, Castle finished with 15 points on 6-of-10 from the field, five rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block in 29 minutes. Doncic had a 38-point triple-double in 38 minutes while converting 13 of 26 attempts from the floor, 2 of 9 from deep and 10 of 16 from the foul line.
In Memphis, Castle had 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals in 28 minutes in becoming the first player to reach 1,500 points and 500 assists in his first 105 career games since Detroit’s Cade Cunningham in 2023. Castle is the fastest player in Spurs history to reach 1,500 points and 500 steals.
Team praised for shrugging off injury adversity
The injury management plan for Victor Wembanyama has kept the Spurs in a state of flux for much of the season, but you would never know it, Mitch Johnson said.
“They’ve been great,” the Spurs coach said of how Wembanyama’s teammates have handled all the changes brought on by the star player’s calf and knee ailments.
Wembanyama’s minutes have been restricted since he returned in mid-December from a 12-game layoff due to a left calf strain. He’s mainly come off the bench since then, a stint that included a two-game period when he was sidelined because of a bruised left knee.
“You go back to Vegas against Oklahoma City (in the NBA Cup semifinals) was the first time we did it,” Johnson said of bringing Wembanyama off the bench. “And we’ve done it numerous times since then in different ways with different amounts of minutes and different groups and lineups. He’s finished some games. He hasn’t finished other games. And it’s been a testament to him and to the rest of the guys of just how they’ve really not blinked in any of it.”
Wembanyama had 16 points, 14 rebounds, four blocks and two steals in 25 minutes in the win over L.A., which left the Spurs 26-11 overall and 6-4 over the last 10 games.
“It doesn’t mean all the results and outcomes are what we want, but they’ve stayed together,” Johnson said. “There’s been no agendas. There’s been no bickering or selfishness regarding it. We have one goal and that’s trying to be the best team we can.”
