Why Stephon Castle struggled offensively in Game 2 loss to Knicks

San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle (5) gets around New York Knicks guard Landry Shamet (44) during the third quarter of Game 2 of the NBA Championship at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio on Friday, June 5, 2026.
Stephon Castle had no problem with Spurs coach Mitch Johnson’s assessment of his performance on the offensive end in the Spurs’ 105-104 loss to the Knicks in Game 2 of the NBA Finals.
The second-year guard finished with 14 points — five below his playoff average — on an inefficient 5-of-14 from the field, four assists and four turnovers in 28 minutes, one of his worst outings in the postseason.
“I think he probably just got caught up in the air a few times trying to make decisions,” Johnson said.
Castle agreed.
“Yeah, that’s fair,” the 2024-25 Rookie of the Year said. “I think just trying to overthink some reads sometimes. I got caught in traffic, especially deep in the paint. It’s something I can go back and look at and see how I can fix.”

An injury also contributed to Castle’s offensive woes. He went to the bench with 6:45 left in the fourth quarter with a sore left ankle after landing on Knicks guard Mikal Bridges’ foot, a mishap that kept him sidelined until he re-entered the game with 30.3 seconds left.
“I was all right,” Castle said. “I think I kind of tweaked my ankle a little bit. But it started to feel good after I warmed it up.”
What bothered Castle most was the Knicks defense, his coach and teammates said.
“They do a great job of multiple efforts, getting back out after they show a crowd,” Johnson said. “Sometimes it’s an early pass (that’s needed), a pass to your teammates to let that guy make a play. If you get caught with one extra dribble or up in the air, they do a really good job of recovery.”
Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox also pointed to New York’s defense when asked about Castle’s struggles.
“That’s a good defensive team,” said Fox, who finished with 20 points and five assists against four turnovers.
“They have long wings, long, strong wings. They make it difficult on you, especially whenever you touch the paint. It is what it is. You have to try to find ways to negate the defensive wings that they have. OG (Anunoby), I think, was second-team All-Defense this year. He has Steph a lot. We have to screen better just to try to free him up, allow him to play in space.”
Castle fared better on the defensive end. Jalen Brunson finished with 20 points, but Castle helped pester the All-NBA guard into an inefficient 7 of 25 from the field.
