INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Spurs forward Devin Vassell impressed coach Mitch Johnson with both his play and vocal leadership down the stretch of the Spurs’ 119-115 win over the Clippers.
“He was pretty vocal in one of the later timeouts just about body language, energy, just finishing the job,” Johnson said.
Vassell backed up his words with his play, hitting a 15-foot jumper with 4:01 left coming out of a timeout after the Clippers had pulled within six points after trailing by 24 in the third quarter. That bucket sparked a 7-0 run that helped the Spurs regain control.
“For him to call it a play like that obviously shows the level of trust that he has in me,” Vassell said of Johnson.
Vassell also sank two free throws with 30 seconds left to put the Spurs ahead by six. In all, he scored six of his 20 points in the fourth quarter.
“I thought it was just a very professional and mature game by his production and the way he went about it,” Johnson said.
Spurs guard Stephon Castle, who finished with 23 points, eight assists and seven rebounds, agreed.
“I feel like in crunch time he always finds the way to make a play, whether it’s offensively or defensively,” Castle said.
Vassell said he prides himself on producing in clutch situations.
“Whenever my number is called, I try to be able to be in a spot where I can deliver,” he said. “It might not just be making the shot. It might just be making a pass.”
