Three takeaways as Spurs claim their 50th win of the season

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Victor Wembanyama had 21 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks to lead the Spurs to a 119-115 victory over the Kawhi Leonard-less Los Angeles Clippers on Monday night that gave the franchise its first 50-win season since a 2016-17 campaign when they recorded 61 wins.
“Fifty wins in this league is tough,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “We don’t need to make more of it than that. Fifty wins in this league is hard to get.”
The Spurs finished 34-48 last season, but that seems long ago for a team that’s a league-best 18-2 since Feb. 1.
Stephon Castle finished with 23 points, eight rebounds and seven assists assists for the Spurs, who improved to 50-18 and now trail West-leading Oklahoma City by three games. Devin Vassell chipped in 20 points and De’Aaron Fox had 18.
Bennedict Mathurin’s inside bucket pulled the Clippers within 108-102 with 4:15 left after they had trailed by 24 in the third quarter, but Vassell answered by sinking a 15-foot pull-up jumper 14 second later. That shot started a 6-0 run and put the Spurs back in control.
The Clippers kept fighting, pulling within four with under 40 seconds left. But Vassell and Fox each hit two free throws in the final 30.4 seconds to seal it.

Billed as a potential first-round playoff preview, the game lost some of its luster after the Clippers (34-34) ruled out Leonard, who is averaging 28.3 points per game, with a sprained left ankle sustained in a 118-109 loss to Sacramento on Saturday.
The Spurs played without two key reserves in Dylan Harper (bruised right calf) and Luke Kornet (sore right knee).
The Spurs overcame a slow start for their second win in a row.
After trailing by 14 points in the first quarter, the Spurs outscored the Clippers 37-15 in the second period for a 66-52 halftime cushion. The Clippers’ 15 points were a season low for a Spurs opponent in the second quarter. The previous low was 18.
Darius Garland led the Clippers with 25 points and 10 assists. Jordan Miller had 22 points off the bench.
Here are three takeaways from the first game of a back-to-back that ends in Sacramento:.
1. Johnson following Pop’s example
During his 29 seasons as the Spurs head coach, Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich had one goal for his team during the regular season: Show improvement with each game.
It’s a model Johnson has adhered to in his first full season as head coach. That’s why notching their 50th win wasn’t reason for a major celebration.
“We never talked about ‘X’ amount of wins. We never talked about playoffs, play-in and the final end for the season,” Johnson said. “What we’ve done is we’ve established our brand and our identity to a level of clarity I think we are satisfied with. Now we have to be more consistent in playing that brand and that identity and just let the chips fall where they may.”
The players have also embraced the “improve with each game” mindset. While acknowledging before the game that 50 wins would be "great’ and that “everyone here will love that,” forward Julian Champagnie said the Spurs have another goal in mind as the playoffs approach.
“We’ve got 15 more times to learn and be better,” he said.
Suffice it to say, Popovich taught them well.

2. Vassell came up big in crunch time
The sixth-year forward’s jumper with four minutes left coming out of a timeout with the Spurs nursing a six-point league was perhaps the biggest bucket of the game. But he wasn’t done, sinking a pair of clutch free throws with 30 seconds left.
He also stepped up as a vocal leader, his coach said.
“Devin just felt sharp all night,” Johnson said. “He was pretty vocal in one of our later timeouts just about body language, energy, just finishing the job. He had a very professional, mature game, I thought, just by his production and the way he want about it.”
3. Johnson’s moves made up for injuries
With Harper and Kornet out, Johnson managed the bench well, giving Carter Bryant 21 minutes after he entered the game averaging 10.2 and little-used Jordan McLaughlin and Mason Plumlee a combined eight.
Johnson continued to give Bryant minutes at the five spot a small-ball look. The rookie responded with 10 points, four rebounds and an assist. He was the only reserve to score in double figures for the Spurs.
The Spurs bench should be whole again soon. Johnson said before the game he’s optimistic that Harper and Kornet will return Tuesday night in Sacramento.
“If not tomorrow, very, very soon,” Johnson said. “But I’m optimistic that they have got a good chance to play tomorrow.”
