How Spurs’ Devin Vassell worked to find his spots against Detroit

San Antonio Spurs forward Devin Vassell, left, celebrates with center Victor Wembanyama (1) after scoring against the Detroit Pistons during the second half Monday, Feb. 23, 2026, in Detroit.

DETROIT — Devin Vassell politely signaled to Keldon Johnson to turn down his boom box in the locker room so he could hear a reporter better in a postgame interview.

It was the only time Monday night the forward asked for anything.

Despite having a hot hand early in the Spurs’ 114-103 victory over the Pistons, Vassell never called for the ball. He knew his teammates would find him if he just kept getting good looks.

And again and again, they found him. And again and again, he found his mark after letting it fly, finishing with a game-high 28 points on 10 of 14 shooting, including 7 of 11 from 3-point range.

“I got rewarded today just by being in the right spots,” Vassell said. “Our guards were getting downhill early and just making the right plays. It’s just one of those games when you’re open and you just got to knock down shots.”

Vassell scored the Spurs’ first nine points against one of the league’s top defensive teams, going 3 for 3 from downtown in the first two minutes after taking and hitting the first shot of the game just six seconds in.

He punctuated his performance by sinking a couple of big 3s in the fourth quarter, with his final trey coming out of a timeout with 7:22 left after Detroit had cut the Spurs’ 14-point lead early in the final frame to nine. The Pistons never got closer than 10 the rest of the way.

Thirteen seconds after he hit that three, Vassell blocked Cade Cunningham’s driving layup attempt.

“He guarded the ball well, communicated well, but, I mean, his scoring. I feel like he kind of willed us to the win,” Spurs guard Stephon Castle said. "He spaced the court, made the right plays, turned down a couple (of shots) to make an extra pass even when some of us wanted him to keep shooting.

“Dev’s been great for us all year. Coach (Mitch Johnson) said it best, he’s been putting his energy in the right places, so he was bound to have a night like this.”

Vassell finished 10 of 14, including 7 of 11 from beyond the arc, on his way to scoring his most points since he had 28 in a loss at Cleveland on Dec. 5.

“Super efficient,” said Spurs center Victor Wembanyama, who assisted on Vassell’s last 3. “He did not force anything. Everybody was connected (offensively) and he benefited from it. And that is due to his patience and him trusting the process because the coach didn’t call many plays for him. And it’s not like we were actively looking for him at the beginning at least. But he was in the right spot at the right time, running the right way.”

The Spurs finished with 32 assists on 42 made field goals and hit 18 of 40 shots from beyond the arc. Castle had 11 assists to go along with 16 points. De’Aaron Fox had 10 points and seven assists, including setting up two of Vassell’s early buckets,

“We had six players shooting more than 10 shots,” Wembanyama said. “Everybody got to eat tonight. We tried to make it a basketball game, score the ball, and the only way to do that is to share it.”

Kornet fought through injury

Spurs center Luke Kornet showed some grit in returning from an injury that limited him to just one-plus minute in the first half to play seven-plus after halftime.

Kornet limped to the locker room after he got hurt defending against a driving layup by Ron Holland II with about five minutes left in the first period. The Spurs announced he was questionable to return with a right leg contusion.

“I don’t know if it was (Holland) that him me or if it happened when I hit the floor,” said Kornet, who got whistled for a foul on the play. “I just kind of got my shin hit, and then it swelled up a ton pretty immediately. But it’s not a joint or anything. It should be fine.”

After receiving treatment in the locker room, Kornet returned to play seven minutes in the second half. He finished with two points, four rebounds and a steal.

The Spurs play Wednesday night in Toronto.

New two-way player heading to Austin

Mitch Johnson said second-year forward Emanuel Miller will be heading to Austin to play with the team’s G League affiliate after the Spurs signed him to a two-way deal Monday.

The Spurs added the 6-foot 5 Toronto native who played college ball at Texas A&M and TCU after waiving two-way guard Stanley Umude, a graduate of San Antonio’s Warren High.

“We’ve been following Miller for some time and thought he would be a good addition to the group,” Johnson said. “(We) just thought the time was appropriate (to make the move) and looking forward to adding him to the group in Austin.”

Miller, 25, was most recently on a two-way deal with Cleveland. He previously appeared in 11 NBA games with the Chicago Bulls split between this season and last season.

Umude appeared in two games this season with his hometown club, including Saturday’s win over Sacramento in Austin.
