Six seasons with the Spurs has taught Devin Vassell he will be in serious trouble if he turns down an open shot.
No matter who the coach is - first Gregg Popovich, now Mitch Johnson - he knows he will get an earful if he lets a string of misses mess with his confidence.
“Mitch, through everybody in the organization, wants me to shoot the ball, and if I hesitate shooting the ball once, I’m getting yelled at,” he said after the Spurs’ 107-101 win over Miami on Thursday night.
With that in mind, Vassell ignored his 3-for-10 start from 3-point range against the Heat that included missing his five previous attempts in a row and let it fly after gathering in a pass from Victor Wembanyama with the Spurs trailing 91-90 in the fourth quarter.
Vassell’s second to last shot in the game from beyond the arc found its mark, triggering a 16-4 run that left the Spurs leading by 11 with 2:16 left. Wembanyama immediately followed Vassell’s bomb with a 3 of his own on an assist from Julian Champagnie.
“No matter if I’ve just missed the last two, three, four, five, six, I really don’t care,” Vassell said. “I know I can make the next one. I know I can go on a run, making two, three or four (in a row). At the end of the day, we needed a big shot.”

“Me and Vic literally do lobs probably every day or every other day while we’re in shootarounds, so it just felt like practice at that point,” Vassell said. “I just know he literally says, ‘Throw it to the moon,’ and that was at the moon and he caught it.”
