Spurs forward Devin Vassell had one of the most amazing defensive plays in the first round against Portland when he soared from a standing position under the basket to block 7-foot-3 Donovan Clingan’s dunk attempt at the rim.
In Wednesday’s 133-95 dismantling of Minnesota, Vassell had a “wow” moment on the other end of the court.
Early in the third quarter as the 24-second clock ticked down, a well-defended Julian Champagnie tossed the ball from inside the paint out to the corner where Vassell had already left his feet in anticipation of having to release the ball quickly to beat the buzzer.
In a classic “no-dip” shot, Vassell caught the ball and released it at head level in one swift, pure motion for an improbable 3-pointer that gave the Spurs a 64-35 lead with 10 minutes left in the period.
“I saw that the clock was going down and Ju looked like he wasn’t in a spot to shoot the ball,” Vassell told the San Antonio Express-News. “So with point something on the clock, I just knew the ball was coming to me. I was like, I just got to get it off quick. So just instinct. I wouldn’t be able to be like, Oh, I did this (planned thing). No, it’s just instinct.”

“Never seen that before. It was crazy," guard Stephon Castle said. “I don’t even know how he saw the (shot) clock from the corner. Maybe he looked down to the other basket, but it was a big-time play.”
The play was the highlight of another impressive all-around game for Vassell, who finished with 10 points, five rebounds and four assists after recording 14 points, five rebounds, three assists, three steals and a block in the 104-102 loss in Game 1 on Monday.
Through seven playoff games, Vassell is averaging 12.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.7 assists, a team-high 1.4 steals and 1.0 blocks per game.
“He’s been great,” Castle said. “With the guys we have on our team, he’s not going to be the leading scorer every night. But on any given night, he could be. He could go off for 30 points on seven threes. I think just the way he runs the court for his teammates and always makes the right pass (is impressive).”
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said Vassell’s unselfish, consistent play underscores how the six-year veteran is at peace being a role player in support of All-Stars Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox and Castle.
“It is really clear when someone is just secure in who they are and what their role is and how they can help the team,” Johnson said.
