INGLEWOOD, Calif. — The Spurs have plenty of respect for the Los Angeles Clippers after winning two hard-fought games against them in 11 days.
And that’s whether the Clippers have the services of All-Star forward Kawhi Leonard or not.
San Antonio nearly squandered a 24-point lead in outlasting the Clippers 119-115 on Monday night at Intuit Dome in a potential first-round playoff preview.
On March 6 at the Frost Bank Center, the Spurs overcame a 25-point deficit to down the Clippers 116-112.
Leonard, who helped the Spurs win the 2014 NBA championship, was booed every time he touched the ball in the first game. He finished the game with a game-high 30 points to go along with nine rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Leonard sat out Monday night’s contest with a sprained left ankle, but Darius Garland had 25 points and Jordan Miller came off the bench for 22.
“Anytime someone who’s going to leave imprints on a game like Kawhi (is out), the game is going to be different,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. "There’s a lot of ways that it can be different, obviously, but I think the one thing we knew and we saw is that team plays hard for 48 minutes and (coach) Ty (Lue) is very unbothered by doing things outside the box and being creative and playing whoever or guarding whomever. And there was a moment where they brought in a few players that had not played the whole game and they flipped the game.
“That’s a well-coached team and that’s nothing that I would not expect when you play those guys.”
Spurs guard Stephon Castle agreed.
“They’ve been playing good basketball, so a lot of good players on that team,” Castle said. “We were up big tonight and they fought back even with Kawhi out. So, yes, it’s a pretty good team.”
The third and final game of the season series between the teams is set for April 2 in San Antonio.
