How the Spurs’ Carter Bryant is embracing his small-ball role

San Antonio Spurs forward Carter Bryant (11) is fouled by Los Angeles Clippers forward John Collins, bottom, during the first half of an NBA basketball game Monday, March 16, 2026, in Inglewood, Calif.
INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Rookie forward Carter Bryant is embracing the opportunity to get more minutes playing center in the Spurs’ small-ball lineup.
“I’m more comfortable than anybody could really be at my size playing small-ball five,” he told the San Antonio Express-News. “I mean, I got to guard bigger guys my whole life, so I have no problem doing it. It’s just a matter of understanding the concepts and executing it well from a team standpoint.”
With backup center Luke Kornet out with sore right knee, Bryant logged 21 minutes in the Spurs’ 119-115 win over the Clippers on Monday night after he entered the game averaging just 10.2 per game. He finished with 10 points, five rebounds (two on the offensive end) and one assist.
“I think that’s just something you got to want,” the No. 14 pick of the 2025 NBA Draft said of stepping outside his comfort zone. “That’s something that you got to embrace more than anything. And that’s something I’m more than capable of and people see that when they see me play basketball. I embrace being competitive and being able to accept any challenge.”
The Spurs also played without rookie guard Dylan Harper, who missed his second game in a row with a bruised right calf. With two key bench players out, coach Mitch Johnson also gave minutes to little-used guard Jordan McLaughlin (10) and recently signed big man Mason Plumlee (six).
“They were great,” Johnson said of Bryant, McLaughlin and Plumlee. “I thought Carter a couple times got on his heels and started over-thinking a little bit. It’s part of the reason why I don’t have my whole voice because I get going a little bit (at him), but he’s doing great and we needed every minute tonight. We’re going to need minutes from a lot of guys here in this next stretch. And it’s been great to have Mason back out on the court. And I thought J-Mac was, again, 10 minutes of really mature professional basketball. We needed every second.”
And Bryant wants every minute of playing time he can get.
“I’m just trying to scavenge minutes and just fight for minutes where I can,” he said.
