Spurs’ De’Aaron Fox sacrificing numbers in pursuit of championship

San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox (4) holds the ball away at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio on Thursday, March 12, 2026. Since being traded to the Spurs in February 2025, Fox has seen his scoring average drop from roughly 25 points per game to around 19 points per game. That has been intentional as Fox has prioritized sharing the ball with not only Victor Wembanyama but with the team’s young guards, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Sacrificing personal glory in pursuit of achieving team goals has long been a Spurs tradition.

Think first David Robinson and later Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili taking a back seat to Tim Duncan. Ginobili moving to the bench to take on the sixth man role also comes to mind. Ditto for Keldon Johnson in this current era.

De’Aaron Fox is following in their footsteps.

Before Monday night’s 134-111 win over Miami, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra praised the two-time All-Star guard for putting his ego aside as the Spurs pursue the franchises’s sixth NBA championship in this exciting turnaround season.

“I think you have to really commend Fox,” Spoelstra said. "He’s been a 25-plus point scorer for four straight years, and then sacrificing to win, he’s averaging 19 a game.

“People say, ‘Oh, you do whatever it takes to win.’ But I don’t know a lot of players who want to sign up and have their scoring average drop by seven and be great with it.”

Fox, 28, indeed is one of that rare breed.

“I knew what I was signing up for,” he told the San Antonio Express-News in Miami. “Ultimately, I wanted to come and win a championship, and this is definitely the best place for it.”

Fox signed a four-year, $229-million maximum contract extension last August that will keep him under the Spurs’ control through the 2029-2030 season. The Spurs acquired him from Sacramento at the February 2025 trade deadline to serve as an explosive pick-and-roll partner alongside Victor Wembanyama.

Fox, who will miss Wednesday night’s game against Memphis along with Luke Kornet to rest and heal from some nagging ailments, ranks second on the team behind Wembanyama in scoring at 18.9 points per game and is one of eight players on the team averaging 10-plus points.

In addition to sharing the ball with Wembanyama, Fox’s unselfish approach has allowed young guards Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper to “eat” as well.

San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox (4) and San Antonio Spurs guard Dylan Harper (2) slap hands after Harper dunked on the Oklahoma City Thunder in the third quarter at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2025. The Spurs defeated the Thunder, 130-110.

But Fox was quick to point out that the Spurs are filled with unselfish players.

“We have probably nine guys that could start on a lot of teams in this league, so I think everybody sacrificed for each other,” he said. “That’s what makes us good.”

The ninth-year pro averaged at least 25.0 points per game in four out of five seasons with the Kings from 2020-2021 through 2024-2025. He was averaging 25.0 over 45 games last season before the trade.

Since then, he’s been right around 19 points per game.

“He’s not lost a step, so it’s been a very intentional collaboration in terms of how he’s wanted to integrate himself and also make his teammates better,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. "And that’s not just Victor. It’s allowed us to be that much more dynamic because he also has a knack for being able to hit a switch at times and be that man. And we are very comfortable when he does get in that mode where he has the basketball in his hands and he’s going to be in attack mode at all times and kind of be the catalyst for us in terms of pace and aggressiveness.

“And so his ability to pick and choose and balance that is something that’s been very impactful for us and probably in the growth of those two guards.”

Those “two guards” would be Castle, the 2024-25 NBA Rookie of the Year, and Harper, who the Spurs selected second overall in the 2025 NBA draft. Combined with Fox, they give the Spurs a speedy, crafty, downhill trio.

“Best thing for me is to come to a team where even though I’m not scoring 20 every night, I get to learn from a great vet, Fox, who’s obviously been in the league for a while, a two-time All-Star, all that,” Harper said. “So, I get to learn from someone like him and just take that kind of back seat while also being aggressive. Honestly, scoring 20 ain’t the main thing, the main thing for me is winning. As long as you win, I’m OK.”

It works out because they all “enjoy playing together,” Fox said.

“We enjoy seeing each other succeed, so that makes sharing the ball that much easier because obviously Vic can isolate, I can isolate. Steph, Dylan, we have a bunch of guys that can just go out there and go get it. But we don’t play that way.” Fox said. “And we know that throughout the course of the game, there are times where we do have to just be able to go out and get a bucket. But we continue to move the ball. We try to make it easier on ourselves, and being able to move the ball does that.”

Bottom line, the Spurs are filled with players willing to sacrifice for the common good.

“Egos only become a problem when there’s also insecurities or jealousy or things that then turn it negative,” Johnson said. "Ego typically means that you have a level of confidence and assurance that you are worthy and capable of whatever is being discussed. And so I think the ego of that locker room is stronger as the group than as the individual. That’s why the egos work because Keldon’s going to sit there and say Victor’s the MVP after Victor told you (Keldon) is the heart and soul of the team, and they’re going to tell you that Fox is the key to why it’s all working, but then he is going to tell you (about) these two young guards.

“… And so it is this kumbaya. … But I mean, it’s been six months now. I think if anything was BS or full of it, it would show itself at this point.”

The only things showing at this point is how unified the Spurs are in pursuit of one goal.

“We’re worried about winning a championship,” Fox said.
