INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Spurs rookie forward Carter Bryant will fulfill a childhood dream at NBA All-Star Saturday.
“To be able to compete in the dunk contest, what kid doesn’t want to do that?” he said.
The 20-year-old No. 14 overall pick said he’s been preparing for this moment all his life.
“I have so many videos of me dunking on the mini-Nerf hoop in my mom’s room,” said Bryant, who was born in nearby Riverside, Calif.
"Growing up, I lived in a two-bedroom apartment with all my sisters and I had a dog and I had my mom. I’m up at 10 o’clock at night dunking on the rim. My mom’s yelling at me. I went through three, four Nerf hoops, breaking the rim, just trying to dunk too hard, doing stuff I ain’t have no business doing.
“So for me to be able to do it on the biggest stage in my hometown, I’m so grateful.”
Carter also achieved a dream Friday night when he was around so many NBA greats while helping Team Vince win the Rising Stars mini-tournament.
Team Vince’s honorary coach was Vince Carter. The tournament also included honorary coaches Carmelo Anthony and Tracy McGrady — all of them NBA greats that Bryant has studied.
“I used to go back and watch all those games (featuring Carter, Anthony and McGrady) during COVID, when they were posting all those amazing games,” Bryant said. “If you went through my YouTube account, I’d probably watch every single one they post. So being able to compete in front of them and just make connections (was great).”
Bryant also soaked up all the wisdom Carter, Anthony and McGrady had to offer.
“I think that’s one thing that people take for granted, when we have these greats in front of us and people don’t listen to really understanding and comprehend what’s being said,” Bryant said. “They kind of let it go through one ear and off the other. No matter if it’s good, bad, indifferent, if these guys are telling you that you’re not playing hard enough, they’re probably right.”
