Spurs’ Carter Bryant opens up about dunk contest

San Antonio Spurs forward Carter Bryant (11) dunks on the Oklahoma City Thunder during the first quarter at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2026.
After missing several dunks earlier in the season, ultra-athletic Spurs rookie forward Carter Bryant gave no thought to the NBA considering him for the dunk contest at NBA All-Star weekend.
Yet there was his name among the participants announced Saturday.
“It was dope,” Bryant said of his selection. “It’s one of those things that I didn’t really expect, especially with the way I started off the year dunking the basketball. But it is what it is. I’m grateful for it, though.”
Word leaked last month that Bryant would be a participant, but it wasn’t made official until Saturday.
The Los Angeles Lakers’ Jaxson Hayes, the Miami Heat’s Keshad Johnson and the Orlando Magic’s Jase Richardson will compete against Bryant. Three-time defending champion Mac McClung chose not to participate.
The event is scheduled for next Saturday night at Intuit Dome in Inglewood, Calif.
The NBA also announced that Spurs rookie guard Dylan Harper will participate in the Shooting Stars, a timed shooting competition, also set for next Saturday night. His teammates will be his brother Ron Harper Jr. and his father Ron Harper Sr.
Bryant, 20, said the selection fulfills a lifelong dream and he’s thrilled to follow in the footsteps of two of his basketball idols, Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan.
“That’s one thing that as a kid you always dream of,” Bryant said of competing in the dunk contest. “You don’t never not dream of being in a dunk contest. I love Kobe and Mike, and you just see Mike walking out with the two (gold) chains and with the scrunch socks and the Jordan 1s, and he’s jumping from the free throw line. He got his little swag. And then you just see young Kobe flexing at the crowd with the fro and everything. So, I think for me, it is something that the greats did, my favorite players of all time did. It was like, this is a great way for me to start off my career, especially with how I started off the year. I feel like this is a real redemption.”
Bryant said he already has his routine for the competition set.
“Yeah, I think I know what I’m going to go to through the first three dunks, kind of trying to spice things up for that last dunk, really test my limits, see what I can get to,” he said. “But I think the biggest thing where people go wrong, they try to do too much and they don’t make a dunk and they don’t even give themselves an opportunity to win it.”
Spurs guard Stephon Castle, who lost last year’s dunk contest to Mac McClung, has been giving Bryant advice.
“Steph’s been talking to me every day,” Bryant said. “He’s like, ‘You got to make the (first) dunk.’ I’m like, Steph, I know. I usually practice the dunks in the evening after I’m done shooting. I make my shots and then just kind of go try stuff with my boys. I have a dunk coach that came down, so I’ve been working with him a little bit. Kind of just helped me get my technique and just getting the ball through or whatever the case may be.
"But, yeah, it’s been really fun kind of seeing the process of it all and kind of seeing it come to life. There’s a trick dunks I was really struggling to get down and then he kind of tells you a trick or two or a little tip and it’s like, oh, I can make this dunk easy now. So it’s pretty cool.”
