INGLEWOOD, Calif. — The Spurs will have yet another participant in the Rising Stars mini-tournament on Friday night after rookie forward Carter Bryant was added to the event as an injury replacement.
Bryant replaced Memphis rookie guard Cedric Coward (knee) on team Vince, led by NBA great Vince Carter.
Spurs second-year guard Stephon Castle and rookie guard Dylan Harper earned their selections in a vote by NBA assistant coaches.
Bryant is also scheduled to compete in the dunk contest on Saturday night.
Bryant got off to a slow start after the Spurs selected him 14th overall in the June draft, but he’s been performing well lately, averaging 9.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists while shooting 41.7% from 3-point range on 4.8 attempts over his last five games.
“He didn’t play as much as he wanted to early in the season. I told him ‘just stay the course,’” Castle said. “Me and him, we get in the gym together all the time, so I know what his potential is like.”
Asked what he thinks Bryant’s ceiling is, Castle said, “I think he can be really good. I don’t want to put a cap on his game. I feel like he has a very unique game, especially with the way he defends. I don’t think he’s shown what his offensive game can be yet. So just as he gets more comfortable and as he grows with our coaches and our system, I think he’ll start to show more of that. But he’s already put his defense on display. I think he’ll be good for years to come.”
