(AP Photo/Mark J. Terrill)

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Spurs rookie forward Carter Bryant’s phone went off right in the middle of an intense workout.

“I was probably working out as hard as I’ve worked out in the past three months, and they were like, ‘Yo, you want to play in the Rising Stars game?’ And I was like, ‘What are you talking about?’” Bryant said.

Already slated to participate in the dunk contest at All-Star weekend, the 14th overall pick wound up pulling extra duty after the NBA selected him as a late injury replacement for Memphis rookie Cedric Coward.

“Today was a whirlwind,” Bryant said.

A whirlwind with a wonderful ending that gave him bragging rights over Spurs teammates Stephon Castle and fellow rookie Dylan Harper.

Philadelphia’s VJ Edgecombe scored 17 points to gain MVP honors, Bryant contributed five points, including a key late-game slam, and Team Vince edged Team Melo 25-24 in the Rising Stars mini-tournament championship Friday night.

“He played great,” Harper said of Bryant, who was born in Riverside about 60 miles east of Los Angeles. “Did what he usually does, a dunk, 3-balls, all the little stuff. He came in here and impacted the game.”

A pair of free throws by Edgecombe pushed Team Vince, named for honorary coach Vince Carter, to the target score of 25, ending a tight, back-and-forth affair.

“All the teams did a great job of competing,” Bryant said. “That’s something everybody said they wanted to see. Whether that’s the Rising Stars game, whether that’s the All-Star Game. We set a good tone this evening, and hopefully it carries over to the All-Star game on Sunday.”

Harper led Team Melo, headed by Carmelo Anthony, with eight points and five rebounds, both team highs. Castle had four points, three rebounds and an assist.

“Great young talent, and obviously a bright future for all three of us,” Castle said of the Spurs trio. “I was happy we shared the court together.”

Here are three takeaways from the showcase event for the NBA’s young talent:

1. The ending was a letdown

Team Melo left the court dismayed at the game ending on Edgecombe’s free throws after he was fouled at the rim by Donovan Clingan.

“I don’t make the rules, but I don’t think anyone wanted to see that game ending on free throws,” Harper said.

He’s right. The intense affair needed a better ending. Perhaps a must-win-by-two rule is in order.

2. Harper gained bragging rights in sibling rivalry

With his father, Ron Harper, watching from a front row seat, Dylan Harper sank a 14-foot stepback jumper to give Team Melo a 40-34 victory over the G League squad in the first semifinal.

“I was shooting that shot no matter what,” Harper said.

What made the game-winning basket even sweeter was it came with Dylan’s older brother, Ron Harper Jr., guarding him.

“I think that him sitting there kind of added more juice to it,” Dylan said of his father, the five-time NBA champion. “(The family) has been talking about it for about two weeks since it (the rosters) got announced.”

In the second semifinal, Edgecombe had 17 points and Bryant added four to lead Team Vince to a 41-36 win over Team T-Mac and its honorary coach Tracy McGrady.

3. The Castle-to-Clingan connection did Connecticut proud

Castle said before the Rising Stars it was “going to be fun…cool” to play again with Clingan after they helped Connecticut win the 2024 national championship.

And fun it was for the two Huskies.

In the first semifinal, Castle had six points and five assists. Clingan scored nine.

Castle assisted on Clingan’s first four buckets, including setting up the big man for a pair of dunks.

“That’s my guy,” Clingan said, referring to Castle.

“We obviously had a connection already, so it felt good to rekindle with him,” Castle said.
