SAN FRANCISCO — Two planes sat idling on the tarmac at San Francisco International Airport late Wednesday night, both of them waiting on disparate groups of Spurs players and staffers.

One plane was pointed toward Los Angeles, ready to carry a large contingent of the traveling party headed south for this weekend’s NBA All-Star festivities.

Another was pointed toward home in San Antonio.

Whichever aircraft each person boarded, coach Mitch Johnson was hopeful that man or woman would find what they needed when it finally touched down.

“Everybody has earned and deserves the break,” Johnson said after the Spurs defeated Golden State 126-113 at the Chase Center. “I’m sure everyone will do what they need to do.”

Johnson and about 12 staff members were on the L.A. plane, headed to Hollywood to coach one of the three All-Star teams in Sunday’s main event at the Intuit Dome.

Victor Wembanyama was named a starter in the All-Star mini-tournament. He got a some familiar company Thursday when Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox was tabbed as a last-minute iniury replacement for Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Other Spurs will compete in several of All-Star weekend’s ancillary events: Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper in the Rising Stars game, Harper in the revived Shooting Stars competition and Carter Bryant in the slam dunk contest.

For Fox, who will be making his second career All-Star appearance, the trick is to leaven the demands of the weekend with a healthy dose of rest.

“You want to have fun and enjoy the experience, but also get off your feet for a little bit,” Fox said. “(After the break), every game counts a little bit more, especially when you’re talking about (playoff) seeding and how close the West is.”

The Spurs hit the hiatus on a high note.

In late January, Johnson talked to the team about treating the final eight games heading into the break as a mini-season meant to establish momentum for a final playoff push.

The Spurs went 7-1 in those games, concluding with a six-game winning streak that ranks as their second-longest of the campaign.

They hit the hiatus at 38-16 – their best record at the All-Star break since 2016-17 – and in second place in the Western Conference, with a prime chance to grab the club’s first postseason bid since 2019.

“That’s a tribute to our coaching staff, just trying to keep everything sharp,” Fox said. “The mental part of the game has to be there. Everybody is going through something physically. If you continue to keep your head in the game, that gives you momentum.”
