INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Victor Wembanyama, De’Aaron Fox and Mitch Johnson and his coaching staff plan to get some much-needed rest after representing the Spurs in Sunday’s All-Star Game.
That’s especially true of Fox, who had a taxing travel day after learning Friday that NBA commissioner Adam Silver had selected him to participate as an injury replacement for Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Fox was 20 minutes from his home in Houston when he learned the news after traveling from San Francisco to San Antonio following the Spurs game against Golden State on Wednesday in San Francisco. He was operating on just three hours of sleep when he had to turnaround and head back to California.
Nonetheless, he was glad to have been selected, especially after his 3-pointer at the buzzer gave his Stripes team, coached by Johnson, a win over the Stars squad in the three-team round-robin “U.S. versus the World” tournament.
“I never never take these things for granted,” Fox, who appeared in his second All-Star Game after playing in the 2023 game as a member of the Sacramento Kings, said Sunday night. “I want to be on vacation and not have to work and do things like this, but at the end of the day, I understand the position I’m in and how blessed I am. I’ll never take these things for granted even if I want to take some time off.”
The Spurs will be back in action Thursday night when they play the Phoenix Suns in the first of two “home” games in Austin. The Spurs (38-16) will resume play as the hottest team in the league after winning six in a row.
“I’m excited to go back with my team,” Wembanyama said. “The weekend was fun, but I’m excited to rest a little bit.”
In addition to Wembanyama, Fox, Johnson and the coaching staff, the Spurs were also represented in Inglewood by guards Stephon Castle (Rising Stars), Dylan Harper (Rising Stars, Shooting Stars) and Carter Bryant (Rising Stars, Slam Dunk Contest).
“It was a very memorable weekend, hopefully a heck of experience for everybody,” Johnson said. “I know I made a lot of memories for myself and my family and I think the thing that I was most proud of and pleased with was to be able to see the representation of our organization throughout the whole weekend.”
Wembanyama unveils summer plans
Wembanyama is already making plans for this summer. The All-Star center told a French media outlet on Sunday that he wants to join Team France for the 2027 World Cup qualifiers on July 3-6 and Aug. 24-Sept. 1.
“Of course, that’s absolutely my goal,” he told BeIN Sports France. "But I hope I won’t be able to make the first window — that would mean we (the Spurs) went all the way to the NBA Finals. I hope the timing will be too tight.
“But for the August window, absolutely. That’s my goal to be there. Knock on wood, if I’m healthy.”
Wembanyama led the French team to a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, averaging 15.8 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per game in the tournament.
The 22-year-old undoubtedly has a lot more planned for the offseason, but it’s clear he wants to spend at least a portion of the summer representing his country again on a global stage.
