INGLEWOOD, Calif. — With Mitch Johnson and his Spurs coaching staff guiding the Stripes team in the U.S. versus the World All-Star Game here on Sunday, their trip to All-Star weekend isn’t exactly a Cabo San Lucas-like restful vacation.

But Johnson made it clear after the Spurs’ 126-113 come-from-behind win at Golden State on Wednesday night that he’s going to do what he can to make sure Matt Nielsen, Sean Sweeney, Corliss Williamson and his other assistants get some much-needed rest while in Southern California.

“I’m not going to talk to them about anything (Spurs-related),” Johnson said. “We’re going to be in L.A. enjoying All-Star weekend, but we’re going to use it as a break. Everybody needs a mental, physical and emotional break right now.”

In addition to the coaching staff, the Spurs will have several players at All-Star weekend, including Victor Wembanyama (World team starter), De’Aaron Fox (Stripes team replacement), Stephon Castle (Rising Stars), Dylan Harper (Rising Stars, Shooting Stars) and Carter Bryant (dunk contest).

Despite the abundance of Spurs personnel in L.A., there will be no shop talk, Johnson said.

“We’re not going to have any walkthroughs or film sessions in L.A,” Johnson said.

The Spurs (38-16) entered the All-Star break as the hottest team in the league, having won six in a row, the league’s longest current winning streak. They’ll reconvene in San Antonio on Tuesday in preparation for playing two “home” games in Austin next week (Phoenix on Thursday, Sacramento on Saturday) before resuming their rodeo trip with a five-game journey east for games against Detroit, Toronto, Brooklyn, New York and Philadelphia.
