LOS ANGELES — Victor Wembanyama is well aware of the Spurs’ almost maddening habit of playing up to quality competition then playing down to lesser teams.

“The good thing is, we can match up with everybody and look anybody in the eye,” Wembanyama said earlier this season. “The bad thing is, we look everybody in the eye.”

Staring down an undermanned Los Angeles Lakers squad Tuesday, there was nobody looking the 7-foot-4 Wembanyama in the eye.

The All-Star center matched a season high with 40 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in 26 minutes to guide the Spurs to a 136-108 blowout victory at Crypto.com Arena.

Wembanyama scored 25 points in the first quarter and went into halftime with 37.

He made 13 of 20 attempts from the floor, 4 of 6 from 3-point range and 10 of 12 from the foul line.

Following their best players’ lead, the Spurs burst out to a 47-30 lead after the first quarter, equaling the highest-scoring opening frame in franchise history.

The Spurs’ lead got as high as 41 points in the second half, until both teams dug deep into their bench to bleed out the fourth quarter.

The Lakers’ night could have been worse if not for Luke Kennard, who arrived at the trade deadline from Atlanta. Kennard had 14 points, tying backup big man Drew Timme for the Lakers’ game high.

The Spurs won their fifth game in a row and 10th in the past 13 contests heading into their final game before the All-Star break Wednesday at Golden State.

Here are three takeaways from Tuesday’s lopsided result, which improved the Spurs to 37-16:

1. Another “appropriate fear” game

The Lakers entered the game with a star-studded inactive list, a turn of events that hasn’t always brought out the best in the Spurs this season.

No Luka Doncic (hamstring). No LeBron James (41-year-old on the second night of a back-to-back). No Austin Reaves (injury management). No Marcus Smart (ankle). No DeAndre Ayton (knee).

As an aside: It was an monumental absence for James, who missed his 18th game of the season. It is now impossible for the four-time NBA MVP to reach 65 games played, the threshold for being eligible for postseason awards.

That means James’ league-record streak of 21 consecutive seasons on the All-NBA team is no more.

Back on Feb. 4, the Spurs faced an Oklahoma City squad down eight rotation players, including the entire starting lineup and three All-Stars.

The Spurs struggled to put the depleted Thunder away in that game before ultimately surviving 116-106.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson was not happy after that victory. He could be more pleased with Tuesday’s performance.

To use a golf analogy, Johnson has encouraged his team to “play the course” each night and not the opponent. The Spurs aced the test at Crypto.com Arena.

So dominant were the Spurs, mostly from start to finish, that no player logged more than Carter Bryant’s 27 minutes.

Aside from Stephon Castle — who suffered a pelvic contusion blocking a shot in the second quarter — the Spurs have a chance to have a mostly full roster for Wednesday’s back-to-back finisher in San Francisco.

2. Wembanyama sets the tone

Wembanyama said he was well aware of the Spurs’ missteps against “quote-unquote” lesser teams. He was determined to show his team the way Tuesday.

It was Wembanyama who got the Spurs pointed toward the blowout win, scoring 17 points in the game’s first 4:14.

By the 6:19 mark of the first quarter, Wembanyama had 21 points — already the highest-scoring quarter of his career.

A post shared by San Antonio Spurs (@ spurs)

Wembanyama’s 37 points at half marked the most in the NBA since Orlando’s Paolo Banchero reached that number against Indiana in October 2024.

It was the most in the first half on the road since Phoenix’s Devin Booker did it at New Orleans in April 2024.

By halftime, the Spurs led 84-55, having posted their second consecutive 80-point first half.

Wembanyama’s services were less necessary after intermission. He logged 7:47 of the third quarter, buried a 3-pointer to get to 40 points and called it a night.

3. A good night for the rookie class

Tuesday provided a nice springboard for a pair of rookies heading toward All-Star weekend.

Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant combined for 31 points to give the Spurs a youthful jolt.

Bryant had 16 points, setting his season high, with 14 coming in the second quarter. He has scored in double figures in three of the past four games.

Harper scored 15 points with six assists. His plus-27 was the highest among Spurs bench players.

Yes, all of that came against a Lakers team not ready to compete for much of anything Tuesday. Still, it was a good sign for the Spurs’ rookie class as the All-Star break looms.
