SAN FRANCISCO – With 4:13 remaining on Tuesday night in Los Angeles, Spurs center Victor Wembanyama headed to the bench at Crypto.com Arena.
He had already posted his second 40-point game of the season. His team was well on its way to a 135-108 trouncing of the undermanned Lakers.
Still, Wembanyama wanted more.
At one point, the 22-year-old All-Star pantomimed a jog toward the scorer’s table, joking about checking himself back in.
“These kind of games, you have to have the greed,” the 7-foot-4 Frenchman said. “You have to want more every time.”
The Spurs’ coaching staff had other ideas.
Though Wembanyama begged and pleaded, trying to cajole his way onto the court for a meaningless fourth quarter, his entreaties went unheeded.
It was about the only time all night Wembanyama could be denied.
The 22-year-old All-Star stayed on the bench for the final quarter of the blowout, having to settle for a 40-point, 12-rebound effort that required only 26 minutes of court time to complete.
“I was pushing to go back, but they did the right thing by keeping me on the bench,” said Wembanyama, whose team was set to close the pre All-Star portion of its schedule with a back-to-back finisher Wednesday at Golden State. “We’ve got to think long term.”
Wembanyama got the fourth quarter off Tuesday in part because of a hot start that made quick work of the short-handed Lakers.
He scored 25 points in the first quarter, the third highest-scoring frame in franchise history behind George Gervin (33) and David Robinson (28).
Wembanyama had 17 points in the game’s first 4:14, lighting up the Crypto.com Arena scoreboard before the Lakers crowd had fully gotten settled.
By the 6:13 mark, Wembanyama had 21 points — already the highest-scoring quarter of his career.
The Spurs ended the quarter ahead 47-30, having equaled the club record for most points in an opening frame. Wembanyama was the reason why.
“He was very aggressive,” Los Angeles coach J.J. Redick said. “As aggressive to start a game as I’ve ever seen him.”
There was a reason for that.
The Lakers came into the night missing four regular starters, including a pair of All-Stars. Luka Doncic, LeBron James, DeAndre Ayton and Austin Reaves were all out, as was key reserve Marcus Smart.
This sort of circumstance has proven troublesome this season for the Spurs, who have displayed a maddening tendency to play down to weakened competition.
Wembanyama was determined not to let that happen Tuesday.
“What got me going is honestly proving myself a point and proving my team a point,” Wembanyama said. “I’m not worried about us against good teams. History has shown me that I need to be worried about us against teams like this.”
By intermission, Wembanyama had notched 37 points, mathematically on pace to beat David Robinson’s single-game franchise record of 71.
The Spurs were ahead by an eye-popping margin of 84-55, having posted their second consecutive first half.
Wembanyama’s services were not exactly needed after that.
With 4:34 remaining in the third, Wembanyama swished a 3-pointer that put him at 40 points, his most since the season opener at Dallas.
The Spurs were ahead 100-68.
It was clear Wembanyama was nearing the end of his night, especially with another game looming in less than 24 hours in San Francisco.
“After he hit 40, I looked up and we were up (nearly) 40,” rookie guard Dylan Harper said. “It was like, ‘Yeah, he needs to come sit down.’ ”
Even in limited playing time, Wembanyama turned in a full day’s work in the box score.
Tuesday marked the sixth 40-point game of Wembanyama’s career — one more than franchise great Tim Duncan managed during his 19-season Hall of Fame career.
He finished 13-of-20 from the field, 4-of-6 from 3-point range and 10-of-12 from the free-throw line while adding two steals and a block.
Since the advent of the shot clock in 1954-55, only five players have tallied at least 40 points in 26 minutes or less. Wembanyama is one of them.
He and Patrick Ewing are the only two players in league history to log a 40-point double-double in so few minutes.
It was enough to make Wembanyama’s fellow Spurs wonder what he could have accomplished had he been allowed to be greedy.
“I think he could have gotten 60,” Harper said.
