What Stephon Castle said about his frightening fall in Los Angeles

From left to right, San Antonio Spurs’ Keldon Johnson, Stephon Castle, Victor Wembanyama and Devin Vassell laugh on the bench during the second half of their NBA basketball game against the Dallas Mavericks, Saturday, Feb. 7, 2026, in San Antonio. Castle suffered a pelvic contusion Tuesday after he fell awkwardly on a block attempt against the Los Angeles Lakers.
LOS ANGELES — Spurs guard Stephon Castle is confident the pelvic contusion he suffered in the first half of the Spurs’ 136-108 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday won’t keep him out long.
If Castle has his way, he would be back on the court Wednesday at Golden State.
“I’m hoping to play,” Castle said.
Castle was injured with 4:10 remaining in the second quarter, after taking a frightening fall to the Crypto.com Arena court while blocking a dunk attempt by the Lakers’ Rui Hachimura.
Castle remained on the floor for several minutes before peeling himself off the hardwood and walking on his own to the locker room.
X-rays to Castle’s back taken at halftime revealed no structural damage. He sat out the second half with what the team termed a pelvic contusion.
In layman’s terms, Castle literally busted his backside.
“I was hoping to land on my feet,” Castle said. “It was kind of like a weird fall. I didn’t expect him to (try to) dunk it. That’s what messed me up. I thought he was going to go for the backboard.”
The Spurs were ahead by 25 at the time of Castle’s injury. Seeing their tough-as-nails teammates prone on the floor for such an extended period was jarring to the other Spurs.

“He’s not a guy that we’re used to seeing stay on the ground that long,” Victor Wembanyama said. “Every second that passed, I was a little more worried.”
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said he breathed a sigh of relief when Castle was able to take himself to the locker room under his own power.
“I’m expecting he’ll be pretty sore — more than pretty sore,” Johnson said. “It was good that he walked off and didn’t feel like it was anything else.”
The Spurs finish a back-to-back Wednesday against the Warriors, then have a week off for the All-Star break.
Castle is slated to return to Los Angeles to play in the Rising Stars Challenge on Friday at the Intuit Dome.
He said he considered himself “day to day” heading into the clash with Golden State.
It is likely the Spurs choose to hold Castle out Wednesday out of an abundance of caution. Whatever his prognosis, the Spurs feel like they dodged a bullet with the reigning Western Conference Player of the Week.
“He’s one of the toughest guys I know,” Wembanyama said of Castle. “I’m pretty confident he’s going to come back quick.”
