pic.twitter.com/uFSAbpxDHU

Carter Bryant left with ‘worst feeling’ after loss in dunk contest

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Carter Bryant’s loss to Keshad Johnson in the final round of the Slam Dunk contest at All-Star Saturday left him nearly in tears.
And that’s the silver lining for the Spurs: The 20-year-old rookie hates to lose — at anything.
“Losing is the worst thing on planet Earth,” Bryant said. “It’s the worst feeling. It just runs deep. It stings. It hurts. So, I mean, it is what it is, but it is not going to be a feeling that’s forgot.”
Johnson overcame perfect scores registered by Bryant on his first dunk in the final round. The 24-year-old second-year pro with the Miami Heat began his final dunk behind the judge’s table before taking off the from the foul line to bury a one-handed windmill slam. His first dunk, a between-the-legs move, earned a higher score.
Bryant collected the contest’s highest score with his first dunk in the final round when he bounced the ball in front of him, caught it between his legs and delivered a swift, thundering windmill slam.
All five judges, including former Spur Brent Barry, gave him perfect 50 marks.
But the native of nearby Riverside struggled on his second attempt, missing the first two tries on a reverse attempt after bouncing the ball off the glass. With the 90-second clock running down while he chatted casually with NBC analyst Vince Carter, he had to settle for a mundane dunk on his final try when he needed a 47.6 to win the contest.
“If I put that dunk down, I win it,” Bryant said. “That’s probably the dunk I’ve made the most out of all the dunks I did today in my life. I’ve been doing that dunk since I’ve been 14. Just didn’t get the ball. Didn’t roll my way. But it happens. It’s a part of life.”

Johnson also entertained the crowd at Intuit Dome with his dancing before and after his dunks. After accepting the trophy from ABA-NBA legend and judge Julius Erving, Johnson said, “All the kids out there, keep dreaming, anything can happen. I just came out here and showed people.”
The four-man field also included the Los Angeles Lakers’ Jaxson Hayes and Orlando’s Jase Richardson. Three-time champion Mac McClung, who is on a two-way contract with Chicago, chose not to participate. Several of Bryant’s Spurs teammates were on hand to cheer him on, including Stephon Castle, who lost to McClung in the final round last year in San Francisco.
Bryant said he was glad a fellow Arizona alumnus claimed the trophy.
“Keshad did a great job,” he said. “That’s an Arizona guy. If anybody else could take it home, glad it was him.”
Bryant could also take solace in how far he’s come as a dunker this season. He missed several attempts in games earlier in the season, failures that led to some of his veteran teammates vowing to shave his head if he missed again.
“Ironically enough, the downfall of the dunk contest was everything everybody has been joking about this year,” Bryant said, “so there’s a little bit of truth in everything.”
Bryant said he hopes to get another shot at the dunk contest at All-Star weekend next season in Phoenix.
“That’s home for me too,” he said. “I would love to get another try in front of my Wildcat family.”
Spurs rookie Dylan Harper also suffered a loss Saturday, but he had some fun with it, blaming his dad for Team Harper’s downfall in the Shooting Stars competition.
Team Knicks — Karl-Anthony Towns, Jalen Brunson and Allan Houston — claimed the event with 47 points over Team Cameron’s trio of Duke products, Kon Knueppel, Jalen Johnson and Corey Maggette, which had 38.
Harper, his brother Ron Harper Jr., and their father Ron and Team All-Star’s Richard Hamilton, Chet Holmgren and Scottie Barnes got eliminated after the first round.

“I think my dad kind of set the standard on the layups,” Dylan Harper joked, referring to his 62-year-old father’s struggles. “We all kind of knew the outcome, what was coming.”
The elder Harper, who won five NBA titles during his 15-year NBA career, hopes his sons — Ron Jr. is with the Boston Celtics — will have a chance to collect some rings of their own.
“I hope they win more rings than I ever have, for sure,” Ron said. “I want them to win six, seven, eight rings. They both play on two great basketball teams, great organizations, and I definitely hope they win some rings.”
Asked specifically about Dylan’s future, Ron said, “I think the Spurs are a first-class place. He has a chance to learn the ball game and play with some very good basketball players there. And if they keep continuing to build as a basketball club, they will have a chance.”
Especially with ultra-competitive players like Bryant, who helped his team win the Rising Stars mini-tournament on Friday night.
“Losing sucks. I hate losing. That’s the thing I hate the most on Earth, no matter what it is,” Bryant said. “I could care less if it was an UNO game. I care less if I’m running lines. I could care less if it’s a shooting competition. That feel of losing, it’s something that burns. I just hate it. That’s something you don’t want to feel, but I’m going to get it back. I’m for sure going to get it back one way or another.”
