INDIANAPOLIS — Spurs coach Mitch Johnson was named the NBA’s Western Conference Coach of the Month for December, the league announced Friday.

It is the first such career honor for Johnson.

“It is, in my opinion, a reflection of the team success,” Johnson said before Friday’s game against Indiana at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. “That’s a byproduct of the operation from top to bottom, and the players bring that to life. The acknowledgement is real, but it’s more about the whole than the coach.”

In only his second full month as the Spurs’ full-time head coach, Johnson guided the Spurs to an 11-3 mark in December, the best record in the NBA during that span.

The month included a run to the Emirates NBA Cup championship game, a 6-1 road record and an eight-game winning streak that marked the Spurs’ longest since 2019.

Under Johnson, the Spurs accomplished all of that despite missing star center Victor Wembanyama for the first two weeks of the month due to a calf strain.

Boston’s Joe Mazzulla earned the award for the Eastern Conference.

The 39-year-old Johnson gives the Spurs their first coach of the month honoree since February of 2017, when Gregg Popovich won the last of his league-record 17 honors.

This is the second such instance in NBA history, both by San Antonio. Also during the month, eight different players averaged at least 10.0 points as the Spurs went 5-1 in clutch games.

San Antonio averaged 121.4 points per game and held opponents to 115.0, posting a 118.9 offensive rating (fifth in the NBA) and a 112.0 defensive rating (sixth) while leading the league in defensive rebounding percentage (74.3).

Johnson is in his first full season of coaching the Spurs after stepping in for Gregg Popovich, who suffered a stroke, last season after just five games. Despite many injuries, including Victor Wembanyama only appearing in 46 games before being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in February, the Spurs went 32-45 with Johnson at the helm, and that record was officially transferred from Pop’s record to his after Pop retired at the end of the season and Johnson was officially named head coach. Despite the massive shoes to fill, the Spurs are off to a better-than-expected 24-9 start this season and currently are the 2nd seed in the West.
