Victor Wembanyama grinned Sunday when he heard the news Spurs coach Mitch Johnson had earned a spot coaching an NBA All-Star team later this month in Los Angeles.

“I’m so happy for him,” Wembanyama said.

Johnson clinched the honor Sunday, by virtue of the Spurs’ 112-103 victory combined with Oklahoma City’s win over Denver later that night.

In doing so, the 39-year-old Johnson became first Spurs coach to earn All-Star coaching honors since Gregg Popovich in 2016. He did so in his first full season as the Spurs’ head coach.

“That’s big-time, well-deserved,” Spurs forward Keldon Johnson said. “Mitch really earned his stripes. He’s been amazing for us this year, an amazing role model for us as a young team.”

OKC coach Mark Daignault handled All-Star duties from the West last season, by rule rendering him ineligible to repeat. The nod would instead go to the coach of whichever team was in second place in the conference by the end of Sunday.

The Spurs’ win over the Magic put them at 33-16. The Nuggets’ loss dropped them to 33-17, handing Johnson the gig by mere percentage points.

The Nuggets-Thunder game was still in progress as Johnson addressed the media after Sunday’s win, leaving him to answer questions about the All-Star gig in hypothetical terms.

“It would be an honor and humbling to be a part of All-Star weekend, with some of the best players in this league,” Johnson said. “It’s an example of the work that these guys have put it. It’s something I would be honored and privileged to do.”

This year’s All-Star mini-tournament will be held Feb. 15 at the Intuit Dome, part of a weekend set to be stocked with Spurs.

Wembanyama will make his second All-Star appearance and first start. Second-year guard Stephon Castle and rookies Dylan Harper and David Jones Garcia will participate in the Rising Stars Challenge. Rookie forward Carter Bryant will compete in the slam dunk contest.

Mitch Johnson’s players have only one wish for their newly minted All-Star coach when he gets to Los Angeles.

“I hope he has the time of his life,” Keldon Johnson said.

SAN ANTONIO – The Spurs started Sunday in Charlotte, North Carolina, then were detoured to Atlanta because of an equipment issue on the team’s charter plane.

But by the end of the night, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson had reached a new destination in his career. With his team’s 112-103 win over the Orlando Magic, Johnson was named the Western Conference All-Star head coach for the Feb. 15 exhibition in Inglewood, California.

“It would be an honor and humbling to be able to be a part of All-Star Weekend with the best players in this league,” Johnson said. “The league always does a great job of putting a great weekend on. It’s an example of and a reflection of the work that these guys have put in.”

Detroit’s J.B. Bickerstaff will coach one of the three All-Star teams under the new “U.S. vs. the World” format. He earned that honor because the Pistons have the best record in the East. Mark Daigneault of the Oklahoma City Thunder cannot coach the All-Star Game this year because he coached at the event last season.

With Daigneault ineligible, Johnson and the Nuggets’ David Adelman were vying for the honor. The Spurs’ win Sunday improved their record to 33-16 and clinched the honor for Johnson. The Nuggets lost to the Thunder, dropping Denver’s record to 33-17.

The NBA has not revealed how the coach of the third All-Star team will be decided.

Johnson reached the milestone following a long day that started at 6 a.m. ET in Charlotte, where the team spent the night snowed in after a loss Saturday to the Hornets. The Spurs were scheduled to fly home immediately after Saturday’s game, but a reported 11 inches of snow fell at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, grounding more than 1,000 flights and causing the NBA to delay the start of Sunday’s Magic-Spurs game from 3 p.m. CT to 6 p.m.

Once the weather cleared up enough for the Spurs to take off for San Antonio, the pilot announced the flight needed to be diverted to Atlanta due to a mechanical issue. So, the NBA delayed the tipoff by another two hours.

The Spurs landed at San Antonio International Airport nearly 4½ hours before tipoff.

“It was a little scary,” forward Keldon Johnson said. “They came on the intercom and said we were losing cabin pressure. We had to emergency land. Our pilot took care of us. After that, the mood kind of lightened up and went back to joking. It was scary.”

Mitch Johnson, who is in his first full season coaching the Spurs, is the second All-Star Game head coach in franchise history and the first since Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich in 2016.

San Antonio’s 33-16 record is its best mark through 49 games since the 2016-17 season.

Johnson has helped the Spurs capture the third-most clutch wins in the NBA (17). San Antonio has an offensive rating of 124.8 in clutch situations.

“I’m so happy for him,” said Spurs big man and All-Star starter Victor Wembanyama, who had 25 points, 8 rebounds, 5 blocks and 4 steals Sunday. “I don’t know how many [coaches] have done this in their first season or first-and-a-half.”

This was quite a weekend for the San Antonio Spurs. First they have to stay over in Charlotte due to weather. Then they have to land in Atlanta en route and change planes due to mechanical issues.

The Spurs return game originally scheduled for 3:00 p.m. was pushed to 6:00 p.m. and eventually 8:00 p.m. The Many of the players and coaching staff went straight from the airport to the arena as there was little time to break between.

The Spurs had a fantastic first quarter followed by an abysmal second quarter giving up 40 points and giving the Orlando Magic the lead. Mitch Johnson went into the locker room and revved up his team. The Silver & Black answered only allowing 42 points in the second half.

For his efforts, Johnson will be rewarded with trip to the All-Star Game.

Entering into Sunday evening, the Spurs needed a win and a Denver Nuggets loss to regain the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference.

But last night OKC played a role in determining the All-Star head coach as they played the Denver Nuggets. Their victory over Denver reinstated the Spurs as second in the Western Conference.

Why is the second seeded coach chosen for the All-Star Game?

For those who are unaware, the coach of the top seeded team takes the helm each year, unless that individual coached the game the previous year.

Oklahoma City Thunder coach Mark Daigneault earned the honor last season, and although OKC is at the top of the Western Conference, he cannot appear in the All-Star Game this season. The honor then goes to the second seed.

Mitch Johnson will join Detroit Pistons’ J.B. Bickerstaff as a 2026 All-Star Game coach, leading one of three teams in Los Angeles during All-Star Weekend.

After the game, Spurs guard Dylan Harper was asked if the team knew the impact of the win against Orlando.

“I didn’t know. He didn’t say anything. Congrats to him, I think he’s done a great job of bringing us together. I think letting us go, but at the same time holding us accountable from top to bottom. So I mean he definitely deserves it, that’s a historical award. Congrats to him.”

Johnson, whose postgame came before the end of the OKC/Denver match, played down the opportunity before it was official but did say that it “I think it would be an honor and humbling to be able to be a part of All-Star Weekend with the best players in this league…it’s something that I’d just be honored to have the privilege to do. Probably a great bonus in memories for me and my family, and if not, I’ll enjoy the break.”

Alas, there will be no break for Mitch Johnson. He’ll coach the Spurs against the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday — their fifth and final meeting of the regular season — before heading to the west coast with Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, David Jones Garcia, and Carter Bryant.
