San Antonio Spurs forward Kelly Olynyk during a game against the Sacramento Kings in San Antonio, Sunday, Nov. 16, 2025. When Olynyk was in San Antonio on Christmas in 2023, he and his wife helped return a lost dog to its owner.

It was Christmas Day of 2023, the San Antonio Spurs had won four games all season, and Kelly Olynyk was a center for the Utah Jazz.

Olynyk, who was traded to the Spurs before this season, was in San Antonio. The Jazz were set to play the Spurs on the day after Christmas.

Olynyk and his wife, Jackie, were driving around looking for somewhere open for lunch on Christmas Day when they spotted a lost dog. It set them off on a Christmas road trip around the Alamo City to return the pup to its rightful owner.

An ESPN segment that aired Tuesday chronicles the Olynyks’ whirlwind day two years ago. The couple opted to fly to San Antonio on their own — rather than on the team charter plane — early Christmas morning. Why? Kelly Olynyk needed to take one more flight that year to achieve platinum status on Delta Air Lines.

When they landed in San Antonio, Kelly Olynyk was hungry.

“When all else fails, I guess, Taco Bell,” Olynyk told ESPN. “And that’s when it all started.”

They drove to a Taco Bell, and it was closed. Then, the couple saw a dog on the street. Jackie Olynyk opened the car door, and the dog jumped onto her lap.

“It was at home. It had a twinkle in its eye, happy to be there," Kelly Olynyk said. "You know, Merry Christmas.”

The Olynyks drove the dog, which didn’t have a collar, to a handful of animal shelters, only to find all of them closed for the holiday. They stopped at Walgreens to pick up dog food and treats.

Meanwhile, Jackie Olynyk had been texting friends, asking if they knew anyone in San Antonio or had any advice for what to do with a lost dog. One recommended they bring the dog to an emergency veterinarian. They did, and found out the dog had a microchip. It included the name of an owner and an address.

The dog’s name was Harley.

Their hopes of returning the dog to its owner were quickly squashed.

“We knock on the door, really excited for this big moment and the person opens and they say ,‘Oh, no, I’ve never had a dog,'" Jackie Olynyk said.

Feeling “a little bit deflated,” they decided to go back to their hotel with Harley and grab a bite to eat.

The couple’s meal was quickly interrupted when a friend of a friend who lived in San Antonio offered up their backyard to Harley. The duo got in the car again, and dropped off Harley. They immediately had second thoughts.

“As we shut the gate, it was kind of like: ‘Damn, are we just gonna leave her in the backyard?'" Kelly Olynyk said.

Jackie Olynyk started to cry. They turned around, opened the door and Harley jumped right back onto her lap.

Then, a Christmas miracle happened. Jackie Olynyk had been posting on social media, and Harley’s actual owner reached out to her. The owner had been without Harley for years and had no idea where the dog was.

Around 9 p.m., the seven-foot-tall NBA player and his wife showed up at the owner’s house with Harley in tow.

“Harley instantly lit up when she saw her,” Jackie Olynyk said. “I felt like I was inside of a Christmas movie.”

The couple isn’t back in San Antonio this Christmas. Kelly Olynyk and the Spurs are in Oklahoma City to take on the NBA-best Thunder.
