Spurs get Kelly Olynyk in trade with Wizards for Branham, Wesley
The Spurs began the offseason lacking depth behind All-Star center Victor Wembanyama.
They now have an abundance.
Two days after officially signing backup center Luke Kornet, the Spurs on Wednesday announced a trade with Washington for center/power forward Kelly Olynyk.
The Spurs gained the 6-foot-11, 240-pound journeyman in a deal that sends young, young guards Malaki Branham and Blake Wesley to the Wizards along with a second-round pick in the 2026 draft.
The second-round pick will be the least favorable of the selections from Dallas, Philadelphia or Oklahoma City, the team confirmed in its announcement.
In Kornet, who helped Boston win a championship in 2024, the Spurs gained a solid low-post backup for Wembanyama. In Olynyk, they have a big who can stretch the floor as an efficient perimeter threat either at the four or five spot.
Olynyk, 34, averaged 8.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists last season, a campaign that included stops in Toronto and New Orleans. For the season, he hit a career-high 41.8% from the 3-point line on nearly two attempts per game.
The 12-year veteran owns career averages of 10.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists while shooting 37.1% from beyond the arc on 3.1 attempts. He has appeared in 48 career playoff games.
Olynyk has one year left on a two-year, $26.25 million extension he signed with the Raptors in March 2024 that will pay him $13.4 million in 2025-26.
The Spurs represent the Toronto native’s fourth team in the past three seasons, including a stop in Washington in which he never played. The Pelicans dealt him to the Wizards in a trade that became official Sunday.
Branham and Wesley, both 22, came to San Antonio in 2022 as first-round picks, with the Spurs selecting the former No. 20 overall and the latter 25th.
Despite their first-round status, both players failed to crack the rotations of either former coach Gregg Popovich or current skipper Mitch Johnson.
Branham averaged 5.0 points, 1.1 rebounds and 9.1 minutes over 47 games last season. In 188 total games, the Ohio State alumnus averaged 8.5 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 19.0 minutes.
Wesley averaged 3.7 points, 2.0 assists and 1.1 rebounds in 11.8 minutes over 58 games last season. In 156 career games, the Notre Dame-ex averaged 4.3 points, 2.4 assists and 1.5 rebounds in 14.3 minutes.
A former Gonzaga standout, Olynyk entered the NBA in 2013 when Dallas selected him 13th overall. He spent his first four seasons with Boston before stints in Miami, Houston, Detroit and Utah.
The Jazz traded him to the Raptors in February 2024. In February 2025, Toronto shipped him to New Orleans.
Olynyk’s arrival signals the Spurs could be moving on from free agent big men Charles Bassey, an injury-plagued 24-year-old Nigerian who played high school ball in San Antonio at St. Anthony, and Bismack Biyombo, a 32-year-old journeyman and native of the Congo who the Spurs signed after Wembanyama’s second NBA season ended last February due to a blood clot in his right shoulder.
With completion of the Olynyk trade, the Spurs have three open standard roster spots, and must fill at least two by the start of the regular season. They also have three open two-way spots. The two second-year players who had two-way deals last season, second-round guard/forward Harrison Ingram and undrafted forward Riley Minix, are restricted free agents.
The Spurs can match any outside offers made to Ingram and Minix.
