OKLAHOMA CITY — Harrison Barnes doesn’t take it for granted that the Spurs are part of the NBA’s marquee Christmas Day lineup.

“Any time as a basketball player you’re asked to play on Christmas Day is special,” the 33-year-old forward said. “Growing up as a kid, watching those games on TV — especially for someone like myself who didn’t have cable — that was a great opportunity. It’s an honor and privilege to be able to do that now.”

Thursday’s clash with the Thunder marks the Spurs’ second Christmas Day game in a row after a seven-year absence.

“Christmas Day has been big for basketball for a long time," Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “You hear even LeBron (James) talk about when he was growing up how a lot of people watched those games. We’ve had a lot of those types of circumstantial games in the last couple years where there’s added visibility. That’s awesome.”

The Spurs are 5-7 all-time in Christmas Day games, including 4-5 on the road after losing 117-114 to New York in Madison Square Garden last season.

In a monster Christmas Day debut, Spurs center Victor Wembanyama produced 42 points, 18 rebounds, four assists and four blocks in 40 minutes, but it wasn’t enough as Mikal Bridges pumped in a season-high 41 points to lead the Knicks to victory in a game that featured 20 lead changes and 12 ties.

Wembanyama became just the third player in league history with 40 points and 15 rebounds on Christmas Day, joining Wilt Chamberlain (1959, 1961) and Nikola Jokic (2022).

Only Chamberlain (45 in '59) and Tracy McGrady (43 in 2000) had more points in a Christmas debut. Wembanyama also set a franchise record for Christmas Day points, surpassing the 33 that LaMarcus Aldridge had in 2016, the last time the Spurs played on the holiday before facing the Knicks.

“We didn’t have the greatest experience losing in the Garden last year on Christmas Day. That was unfortunate," Barnes said.

The Spurs made their Christmas Day debut in 1977, winning 115-105 on the road over the New Orleans Jazz behind George Gervin’s 31 points on 15-of-21 shooting from the field.

The Thunder are 6-14 on Christmas Day, including 4-3 at home.

Wednesday’s game marks the second time the Spurs and Thunder have met on Christmas Day. Russell Westbrook had 34 points and 11 assists to lead Oklahoma City to a 114-106 win in San Antonio in 2014. The Spurs finished with seven double-digit scorers, including Manu Ginobili, who had 11 points to go along with a season-high 13 assists.

Balanced scoring reflects Spurs depth

Underscoring how deep they are, the Spurs have had seven different leading scorers in their past seven victories.

Keldon Johnson led the way in Tuesday’s 130-110 thrashing of the Thunder with 25 points.

“We have that luxury that we can have multiple guys that can have a night,” he said. “We all understand the team aspect of it, that if somebody has it going, we’ve got to give them the ball — regardless of who it might be. Knowing that, it’s huge to have that luxury and having an understanding of it as well. Everybody gets joy from everybody’s success. Winning is the most important thing for us.”

It was the 25th time Johnson has scored at least 20 or more off the bench. Only Manu Ginobili (100) and Patty Mills (35) have had more such games for the Spurs since the 1976-77 season.

Wembanyama block streak snapped

Wembanyama’s streak of consecutive games with at least one block ended Tuesday night at 101 after he didn’t get the green light to play until just before the start of the game.

He began the day listed questionable as the Spurs continued to closely monitor his recovery from the left calf strain that sidelined him for 12 games.

“I would say that every day there is a question of preventative because he is not too far removed from an injury, and we have to be so mindful of that kid’s future and bigger picture," Mitch Johnson said. "We’ve had a lot of travel. He’s had life going on (with the death of his grandmother in France) and we’re just trying to make sure we have his best interests at heart, regardless of winning steaks and excitement and whatever else is going on at the moment.”

Wembanyama’s blocks streak is the third longest in NBA history behind only Patrick Ewing (145) and Dikembe Mutombo (116).

Spurs limit Thunder free throws

The Spurs held Oklahoma City to just seven trips to the foul line Tuesday, the Thunder’s third fewest in a game since they moved from Seattle to Oklahoma City in 2008.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander attempted just five free throws after entering the game averaging more than 11 per game.

“It probably starts with some guys taking a lot of pride while still being very disciplined in how they approach guarding a player like that,” Johnson said of keeping the All-Star guard off the charity stripe.

Stephon Castle, who Johnson charged with defending Gilgeous-Alexander, said not giving him a lot of freebies was a big part of the game plan

“That’s a big emphasis for us,” Castle said. “Try and keep them out of transition offense, make them play half-court offense against us. And then obviously not give them any easy buckets, putting him on the line, and then keeping him off the offensive glass.”

New start time for Lakers game

The Spurs’ home game against the Lakers on Jan. 7 will start at 8:30 p.m. rather than the originally scheduled 6:30 p.m. start, the Spurs announced.

The game will still air locally on FanDuel Sports Network and nationally on ESPN.
