Forward/center Kelly Olynyk arrives at the Frost Bank Center for Game 1 of the Spurs’ playoff series with Portland on Sunday, April 19, 2026 dressed in a custom-made black suit made by his friend, Miami-based tailor Jay Amin.

Kelly Olynyk learned as a rookie with Boston in 2013-14 how nice it is for younger players to have a veteran teammate help them out.

“One of my vets was Rajon Rondo,” Olynyk said. “And one day Rondo called me and said, ‘Meet me at my house.’”

When Olynyk arrived, he found a tailor waiting for him to take his measurements for a custom-made suit. In recent years, Olynyk has been paying Rondo’s kindness forward by gifting suits to his rookie teammates.

Traded last July to the Spurs from Washington, Olynyk planned to give suits to rookies Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant before season’s end, but after the Spurs clinched a playoff berth on March 19, the 13th-year big man came up with a different plan.

“When we made the playoffs, I was like, ‘You know what? Let’s do it for everybody,’” he said.

Olynyk’s largesse was on display Sunday night when the Spurs arrived at the Frost Bank Center for Game 1 of their playoff series with Portland dressed in stylish black custom-tailored suits created by Miami-based bespoke tailor Jay Amin, owner of AMIN New York in Manhattan and his other showrooms in Miami and Hoboken, New Jersey.

The black suits represent “the way this team is united and together,” Olynyk said. He spent more than $36,000 to outfit the entire 18-man roster.

“(Forward) Keldon (Johnson) said it a bunch of times before, ‘Everything we do, we do together,’” Olynyk told the San Antonio Express-News after practice Monday.

As one of the few players on the team with deep-run playoff experience after helping Miami reach the 2020 Finals, Olynyk wanted the Spurs to enter the postseason more united than ever.

“I thought with a lot of these guys, they don’t know what they don’t know,” Olynyk said. “The playoffs are different. It’s a business. You got to be together. You got to block out everything else. We’ve got to be united. So I thought, ‘Let’s do something. Let’s do it together and show everybody we’re here, we’ve arrived and we’re ready to go.’”

Making it happen wasn’t easy for Amin, who became friends with Olynyk when the Toronto native played with the Heat for four seasons from 2018-2021. After the Spurs clinched their playoff berth, Olynyk told Amin he needed the suits in roughly two weeks.

"I was like, ‘Two weeks?’ " Amin said. “It usually takes us three to make a suit.”

But Amin, 41, accepted the challenge and got to work because he thinks that much of Olynyk.

“We have become super close,” Amin said. “I was at his wedding and he is one of those guys that is hard not to love.”

Step one was to get the players’ measurements while they were in Miami to face the Heat on March 23. Fittings and adjustments performed by Amin took place during an off day last week in San Antonio.

“It was obviously a very quick turnaround with a lot of stress involved, but we were able to get them across the finish line,” said Amin, who threw in the shirts as a gift.

“I am very proud of my team. We all went the extra mile, and we will be proud of this for a very long time.”

The suits were a big hit with the players. They beat the Trail Blazers 111-98 on Sunday, which also happened to be Olynyk’s 35th birthday.

"That’s Kelly,” Spurs star Victor Wembanyama said with a smile from the podium when asked after the game about the suits. “Happy birthday, by the way. He took the initiative to make us all wear the same thing. That’s good. It’s a good team thing.”

Johnson, who is more comfortable in boots, blue jeans and a cowboy hat — attire befitting the owner of a ranch in Boerne — said Sunday probably marked the first time he’s worn a suit since he sported an all-white one with a black bow tie at the 2019 NBA draft in Brooklyn.

“It was amazing,” he said of Olynyk’s gift. “I feel like everybody was in unison. It was a big connective thing for the team. We like to do everything together and have fun and enjoy it. And it was good to see everybody dressed up in suits and putting their own spin on it.”

Olynyk, whose accessories included sunglasses and a backward baseball cap, didn’t get into Sunday’s game until the final minute, but he thought he contributed to the team’s confidence entering the postseason by making sure they were all sharp-dressed men.

“Look good, feel good, play good,” he said.
