Spurs star Victor Wembanyama says he ‘trusted process’ during injury r

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) celebrates after the Spurs 126-119 victory over Memphis in an NBA game in San Antonio, Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2025.

LAS VEGAS - Victor Wembanyama said if it was up to him, he “would’ve come back earlier” from the left calf strain that sidelined him for the last 12 games.

But the green light from the Spurs medical personnel - the “best staff in the world,” he called them - to return to the court didn’t come until Friday, a more prudent timeline.

“I think it is more reasonable to listen to them and do as they said,” Wembanyama said. “I have to trust the process a lot.”

The Spurs (17-7) officially listed Wembanyama as probable for Saturday’s NBA Cup Semifinals matchup with the league-leading Oklahoma City Thunder (24-1), but their coach left no doubt that the 7-foot-4 All-Star center will be in the starting lineup when the game tips off shortly after 8 p.m. at T-Mobile Arena.

“I expect him to play,” Mitch Johnson said.

But Johnson also made it clear Wembanyama won’t be shouldering his usual heavy workload. He averaged nearly 35 minutes per game in his 12 outings before the injury.

“He’s going to be tired,” Johnson said. "The excitement, the mental fatigue, he was tired the first time I saw him play live against video guys.

“… I would suspect an early sub and not his normal minutes.”

Wembanyama began “lobbying” to return “since the day” the injury happened, telling the coaches, “I actually feel pretty good. I think I could play tonight,” Johnson said.

But the Spurs were extra cautious, fearing a premature return could lead to further injury, including a season-ending torn Achilles tendon like a few other stars have suffered this year.

Wembanyama said the timing of his return had nothing to do with the Spurs having a chance to advance to the NBA Cup Championship.

“It would have been a mistake to come back earlier,” he said. “So it just happens that I’m coming back in this game in Vegas here. But every single game, I was pushing.”

The Spurs stand to earn $212,373 per player if they reach the championship game and an additional $530,933 should they win the Cup. But Wembanyama said money didn’t factor into the timing of his return either.

“Poor Vic needs more money, right? … Just stacking money hasn’t been any goal of mine in my life,” he said.

Wembanyama said it was difficult watching his team play without him. But, at the same time, he was proud to see them go 9-3 during his absence, a stretch that included beating the Lakers 132-119 on Wednesday in the NBA Cup Quarterfinals to advance to Las Vegas.

“Almost every night they proved to me that I have nothing to worry about,” he said. “Really, the brand of basketball we were playing, that they’ve been playing, just makes me proud because it’s getting closer to the ideal basketball, in my opinion. And everybody has something to eat. Everybody can step up at any time. Everybody can take up responsibilities. Everybody trusts the next teammate, so it’s just beautiful to see.”

Wembanyama returns averaging 26.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 3.6 blocks and 1.1 steals.

“We have been playing extremely well even when he has been out. But him coming back into the fold, I think that adds to us offensively and defensively,” Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox said. "So we want him to continue to be himself.’
