Spurs put Victor Wembanyama’s health ahead of NBA Cup

San Antonio Spurs’ Bismack Biyombo, from left, Jeremy Sochan, Victor Wembanyama and assistant coach Scott King watch their team take on the Atlanta Hawks at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Thursday, Nov. 20, 2025. Wembanyama was ruled out for the team’s Wednesday NBA Cup quarterfinal against the Los Angeles Lakers.
LOS ANGELES — An increase in torn Achilles tendons has been the scourge of the NBA lately. Since last January, Dejounte Murray, Tyrese Haliburton, Jayson Tatum and Damian Lillard have been among the victims.
The Spurs are determined to keep their franchise cornerstone off that hard-luck list.
Confident Victor Wembanyama’s left calf strain hasn’t healed sufficiently for him to return to the court, and adhering to their long-held principle of being conservative when it comes to player health, the Spurs ruled the All-Star center out for Wednesday night’s NBA Cup quarterfinals clash with the Lakers.
It’s a game the Spurs really want to win, of course, but not at the cost of the 21-year-old French superstar.
“It’s more of an outside narrative in terms of which game would somehow affect a player’s progression or timeline,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson told the media Wednesday morning after shootaround.
“He’s doing great,” Johnson continued. “He’s getting very, very close and, unfortunately, all the added excitement and visibility to this game’s not going to play into the decision on if he plays or not.”
Johnson said the next step in Wembanyama’s rehab is underway: vital 5-on-5 work after he began playing 2-on-2 this past weekend in New Orleans.
“He’s getting very close, again, and just need to see how he responds and reacts and if we continue to progress, which we feel very good about,” Johnson said. “We’ll hopefully see him out here soon.”
One 5-on-5 session, though, won’t be enough. Johnson indicated several such sessions will be needed before the medical staff clears Wembanyama to play in the NBA Cup semifinals Saturday in Las Vegas or back in San Antonio next week.
“When you’ve been out an extended amount of time, you usually don’t say, ‘Oh well, this is good,’ and then just go on to something else,” Johnson said. “And so at this point, it’s just being disciplined on really feeling good about getting back and playing an NBA game. Five-on-five is not an NBA game, so I think just making sure we feel good about that and it’s not just feeling good in the moment. It’s also feeling good about how how he responds and reacts the next day, recovery, and so on and so forth.”
One thing is certain: Wembanyama has been champing at the bit to return.
“He wants to be out there,” Johnson said. “He is always wanting to be out there. Fortunately, we have a great staff. Our medical team does a great job communicating and everybody’s on the same page. And so it’s no different than when we tell him to get back in transition defense or set a screen. He trusts the staff and we’re all on the same page with open communication.”
Speculation that Wembanyama might return for Wednesday’s high-stakes game after an 11-game, nearly month-long absence began after Johnson said before Monday night’s 135-132 win in New Orleans that the 21-year-old Frenchman would travel with the team to L.A., but the Spurs ultimately put the All-Star center’s health above getting to Las Vegas.
Bottom line: The Spurs are sticking to their plan of being extra cautious with Wembanyama’s calf injury for fear a premature return could result in something far worse.
“As we’ve seen around this league recently, the calf tightness thing is not something you want to take lightly,” Johnson told reporters recently. “We don’t want to push it there.”
Calf injuries can lead to Achilles issues, and there have been plenty of those lately.
According to USA Today, there have been 63 known Achilles ruptures in the 55 NBA seasons since 1970, excluding the 2025-26 campaign. Yet, 29 of those ruptures — or 46% — have occurred over the most recent 13 seasons, at a rate of 2.23 ruptures per season, the newspaper reported in November.
There were a record-high seven last season, a significant increase over the previous 42 seasons, which yielded a rupture rate of 0.81 per season, per the USA Today analysis.
Thus, giving Wembanyama maximum time to heal is understandably the Spurs’ top priority, and his teammates are on board with the plan.
“Ultimately, we know that we are building towards a goal of being in the playoffs, so we got to hold it down while he’s gone,” Keldon Johnson said. “We got to continue those good habits as when he was here, and when he’s ready to come back, we’ll be ready for him. But until then, his health is our main thing. So, whenever he is ready, whenever he is cleared, we ready to go.”

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama hypes up the crowd as he watches his team defeat the Atlanta Hawks at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Thursday, Nov. 20, 2025. Wembanyama was ruled out for the team’s Wednesday NBA Cup quarterfinal against the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Spurs entered Wednesday’s game carrying an 8-3 mark without their linchpin player, who hasn’t played since he recorded a 26-point, 12-rebound double-double in a 109-108 loss to Golden State on Nov. 14. He was sidelined after that contest and is averaging 26.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, 4.0 assists and a league-high 3.6 blocks in his 12 games played.
Wembanyama led the Spurs to an 8-4 record before the injury, kicking off the season with a 33-point road plastering of Dallas in which he dominated to the tune of 40 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks in his first game since a blood clot in his right shoulder diagnosed in mid-February ended his second NBA season two months early.
Wembanyama won the season’s first Western Conference Player of the Week Award with a torrid three-game stretch in which he averaged 33.3 points, 13.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.7 steals and 6.0 blocks while leading the Spurs to a 3-0 record. His second player of the week honor came after he became the first player in NBA history to amass 100-plus points, 40-plus rebounds and 15-plus blocks in the first three games of a season.
In other injury news, the Spurs upgraded backup point guard Jordan McLaughlin to questionable for Wednesday’s game. He’s missed 10 in a row with a left hamstring strain.
