Spurs coach says experts expect Wembanyama to return next season

San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama, right, talks with acting head coach Mitch Johnson during the first half of a Paris Games 2025 NBA basketball game against the Indiana Pacers in Paris, Thursday, Jan. 23, 2025.

AUSTIN - Medical experts have told the Spurs they are confident Victor Wembanyama will overcome the deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder that ended his season Thursday, acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said.

“The medical experts and the people that are smarter than everybody in the room have confirmed he’ll be done this year and that there is no concern for Victor’s long-term health personally or anything related to his basketball activities, and that there is no reason to not believe that he won’t be ready to go through the start of next season,” Johnson said.

The Spurs became concerned about Wembanyama’s health after he returned from All-Star weekend in San Francisco complaining that “his arm didn’t feel completely normal,” Johnson said before the Spurs’ game against Phoenix on Thursday night at Moody Coliseum.

“That was articulated to our medical staff,” Johnson said. “They looked into it and that’s how we got here.”

Wembanyama capped his busy weekend in San Francisco, which included several public appearances, with a strong performance in the inaugural NBA All-Star Game mini-tournament Sunday night.

Johnson said “conversations” with the team’s medical staff about Wembanyama’s health probably started “around Monday.”

Wembanyama ended his second season averaging 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, an NBA-leading 3.8 blocks and 1.1 steals over 46 games.

“It’s devastating news, I think, because anytime the league loses a player of that magnitude, it’s tough because you’re losing a main player of the league that the fans and people enjoy watching,” Johnson said.

Johnson said he has talked and texted with Wembanyama since he received the diagnosis.

“In terms of his reaction, I was not with him,” Johnson said. “I don’t want to speak into that, but again, I know Victor loves to play the game. You saw how he competed during All-Star weekend and he wants to be with his teammates. I know that he’d want to finish this thing out, so I can only imagine (how difficult this is).”

Johnson said journeyman Bismack Biyombo would start at center against the Suns.

Wembanyama’s usual backup, Charles Bassey, has been sidelined since early February with a knee injury. Johnson said the Spurs have a “good amount of optimism” Bassey will be ready to play in Friday’s game against Detroit, which is also in Austin.

“It’s trending in the right way,” Johnson said of Bassey’s recovery.

The Spurs have adopted a show-must-go-on attitude in the wake of the loss of Wembanyama, knowing that nobody in the league is going to feel sorry for them.

“The Suns don’t care and the Pistons won’t care tomorrow,” Johnson said. "You wake up, you got a job to do, and you have whatever your schedule says.

Johnson said he expects Wembanyama to be “very intellectual and process-driven” in his recovery, which is to say, he will handle it like he does everything else.

“He won’t skip steps and he’ll go about it the right way,” Johnson said.

Johnson said the club will keep private what exactly Wembanyama’s treatment will entail, but he added he’s confident the 21-year-old Frenchman will be fine long-term.

“It’s a minor setback for a major comeback,” Johnson said.
