San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama, center, reacts to a play during the second half of an NBA Cup basketball game against the Los Angeles Lakers Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2025, in Los Angeles. Spurs coach Mitch Johnson expressed optimism after Wednesday’s 132-119 win over the Lakers that Wembanyama could see his first action in nearly a month Saturday when the team faces the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA Cup semifinals.

LOS ANGELES — Spurs coach Mitch Johnson sounded an optimistic note on Wednesday night regarding Victor Wembanyama’s status for the NBA Cup semifinals in Las Vegas.

“Very much so,” Johnson said when asked after the Spurs’ 132-119 win over the Lakers if there was a possibility Wembanyama would play in Vegas.

Wednesday night’s game marked the 12th in a row the All-Star center has missed with a left calf strain. The morning before the game he participated in five-on-five work, an important benchmark in his rehabilitation from the injury.

“He had a really good day today,” Johnson said before the game. “He had a very intense morning, and we’ll see how he responds or reacts tomorrow.”

The Spurs (17-7) improved to 9-3 without the 21-year-old Frenchman. They are set to square off with the defending NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder, who are a league-best 24-1 after their 138-89 demolition of Phoenix on Wednesday night, at 8 p.m. Saturday at T-Mobile Arena.

The championship game is set for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at T-Mobile Arena.

Amazon Prime Video will stream both games.
