Latest from Spurs on Wembanyama’s status for Saturday’s NBA Cup semis
LAS VEGAS — The Spurs on Friday upgraded All-Star center Victor Wembanyama to probable for their NBA Cup Semifinals matchup with Oklahoma City on Saturday night.
The 21-year-old Frenchman has missed the last 12 games in a row due to a calf strain. He last played on Nov. 14 in a home game against Golden State.
The Spurs improved to 9-3 without Wembanyama with Wednesday’s 132-119 win at the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Cup quarterfinals.
Wembanyama was averaging 26.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, 4.0 assists and a league-best 3.6 blocks in the 12 games he played before the injury.
Wembanyama received the upgrade after going through five-on-five workouts in L.A., a vital benchmark in his rehabilitation.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson expressed optimism on Wednesday night regarding Wembanyama’s status for this weekend.
“Very much so,” Johnson said when asked after the Lakers game if there was a possibility Wembanyama would play in Vegas.
The Spurs have been sticking to their plan of being extra cautious with Wembanyama’s calf injury for fear a premature return could result in something far worse such as an Achilles rupture.
“As we’ve seen around this league recently, the calf tightness thing is not something you want to take lightly,” Johnson told reporters recently. “We don’t want to push it there.
“He wants to be out there. He is always wanting to be out there. Fortunately, we have a great staff. Our medical team does a great job communicating and everybody’s on the same page. And so it’s no different than when we tell him to get back in transition defense or set a screen. He trusts the staff and we’re all on the same page with open communication.”
Spurs waive Minix
The Spurs on Friday signed guard Kyle Mangas to a two-way contract. To make room for Mangas, they waived two-way forward Riley Minix.
The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Mangas was averaging 18.5 points, 5.0 assists and 2.9 rebounds in 35.8 minutes across 10 games (eight starts) in his second season with the Austin Spurs. He had a career-high 34 points against Rio Grande Valley on Nov. 23.
In 20 total games (17 starts) with Austin, he averages 17.8 points, 4.2 assists and 3.7 rebounds in 34.0 minutes, and holds career averages of 17.0 points, 4.1 assists and 3.5 rebounds in 57 games with Austin and the Noblesville Boom.
Minix first signed a two-way contract with the Spurs on Aug. 6, 2025. He has appeared in 11 games with the Austin Spurs this season, averaging 15.5 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.0 steals.
