Spurs rule out Victor Wembanyama with calf injury

San Antonio Spurs’ De’Aaron Fox (4) slaps hands with teammate Victor Wembanyama (1) after an offensive foul was called on Wembanyama during the first quarter of an NBA Cup game at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Friday, Nov. 14, 2025.
Victor Wembanyama missed his first game of the season after the Spurs ruled him out with an injury before they faced Sacramento on Sunday.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said in his pre-game news conference Wembanyama would not play against the Kings due to a tight left calf.
“Obviously, we’ve seen around this league recently that the calf tightness thing is not something you want to take lightly,” Johnson said. “So, just got to get some more information. Don’t want to push it there.”
The 7-foot-4 All-Star center popped up on the injury report Saturday, a day after he had 26 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and three blocks in 38 minutes in a 109-108 loss to Golden State.
“I think it was something he just felt,” Johnson said when asked when the injury occurred. “I don’t think there was a specific play.”
Wembanyama missed the last two months of last season with a blood clot in his right shoulder, but he’s played in every game this season until Sunday.
In his third season after entering the league as the No. 1 overall pick in 2023, the 21-year-old Frenchman is averaging 34.7 minutes, 26.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, 4.0 assists, an NBA-best 3.6 blocks and 1.1 steals in his third year in the league.
With Wembanyama out, the Spurs will start Luke Kornet, who is averaging 22.0 minutes off the bench, 9.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists and nearly one block. Wembanyama’s injury could also mean more playing time for Kelly Olynyk.
Lacking depth behind Wembanyama, the Spurs signed the 7-1 Kornet, formerly a Boston Celtic, to a four-year, $41 million contract.
“(Spurs general manager) Brian (Wright) did a great job of seeing a potential fit with (Kornet playing alongside) Victor and then also with our team when Victor wasn’t on the court,” Johnson said. "So, I think when you have somebody with that ability and some of the similarities even they go about it probably in a different way, but with size, rim protection, it fits our style of play and a lot of the brand basketball we want to do. So, there won’t be a ton of change in that regard.
“Obviously it may look a little different, but we don’t have to alter our style play.”
Sunday’s game is the third in a five-game homestand for the Spurs (8-4). They entered the game ranked fifth in the Western Conference standings after losing two in a row to the Warriors.
Johnson also offered an update on rookie Dylan Harper’s left calf strain, saying he is “progressing” and no longer has to wear a walking boot after suffering the injury in a game against Phoenix on Nov. 2.
“It’s getting better and it’ll be good to have him back on the court ramping up here pretty soon,” Johnson said.
Champagnie fights through pain
Spurs forward Julian Champagnie extended his consecutive games played streak to 115 Friday night, but it wasn’t easy.
“That (expletive) hurt,” he said of a bruised hip he suffered against Golden State two nights earlier that forced the Spurs to list him on the injury report as questionable.
Champagnie fought through the pain to hit four shots from 3-point range on his way to 14 points in 23 minutes off the bench, the most of any of the Spurs reserves, in the 109-108 loss.
“I’m going to play all 82,” the 24-year-old New York City native.
Last season, Champagnie was one of two Spurs players who didn’t miss a game. The other one, forward Harrison Barnes, extended his iron man streak to 316 consecutive appearances Friday.
The New York Knicks’ Malik Bridges at 568 is the only current player with a longer run.
Barnes’ streak and all that goes into it has been well documented, overshadowing Champagnie’s grit.
“It’s something that probably gets overlooked too much by everybody,” Johnson of Champagnie’s streak. “Just availability, reliability, dependability — and he’s been that for us in a lot of different ways.”
Friday morning at shootaround, Champagnie knew his streak was in jeopardy.
“It was hurting this morning,” he said of his hip after Friday’s game. “It was hurting yesterday, so I told the doctors: Is it a possibility I might have to sit this one out? (They said), ‘We’ll see.’ But they did a great job with me. I think I did a good job of just taking my off day and really just focusing on getting this to feel better.”
Champagnie continued to experience pain as he left the Frost Bank Center, but he was confident he would suit up Sunday afternoon against Sacramento.
“If I could play like that off a half-working hip, then I’ll be okay,” he said of his performance Friday night.
Champagnie said to take a day off would be letting his teammates down.
"If you play basketball or if you work at a nine-to-five job, there’s days where you get up and you’re like, I don’t want to do this today, but it’s my job,’ " he said of his blue-collar mentality. “All these guys (in the locker room) are counting on us, counting on me. We’re all counting on everybody, so if you feel like you could push through it, you push through it. Because when the playoffs come and those crunch-time games come, we want to be able to muster up some strength.”
Kerr a fan of Johnson
Given their time together in the past working with USA Basketball, Kerr and Johnson have formed a bond.
“Huge fan of Mitch,” Kerr said. “He’s just a really good person, number one. He’s someone you want to go to bat for, someone you want to work with. Very humble, very smart team guy who wants to be part of something, and I think he was a great choice (to succeed Popovich) given his experience here under Pop with this first organization.”
Kerr also noted Johnson’s lifelong connection to the NBA as the son of fomer Seattle SuperSonics forward John Johnson. Kerr said the Warriors are also fans of Johnson because of his connection to the Bay Area as a Stanford alumnus.
“I think he’s doing a great job,” Kerr said.
NBC to air Memphis game
It was announced Friday the Spurs game with Memphis at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Frost Bank Center will now be televised nationally on NBC and Peacock.
The game will no longer air on Fan Duel Sports Network. An additional Spurs game will be added to Fan Duel Sports Network’s broadcast schedule and announced at a later date.
The game will mark the Spurs’ first on NBC since Game 4 of the 2002 Western Conference Semifinals on May 12, 2002, where they fell to the Lakers, 87-85, according to a network spokesperson.
