Spurs’ Mitch Johnson ready to put all the pieces together at the point

San Antonio Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson calls to his players during the first half of a preseason NBA basketball game against the Indiana Pacers in Indianapolis, Monday, Oct. 13, 2025.
Mitch Johnson is ready to figure things out regarding how to rotate his ball-handling guards whenever De’Aaron Fox returns from the hamstring injury that has sidelined him through the preseason and the first four regular season games.
It’s a good problem to have, the Spurs coach said.
“I think we’ve seen this and discussed this here for a couple of years now - we won’t be concerned or disappointed with trying to figure out how to play good players together,” Johnson said. “Some of this stuff is going to take time. We’ll figure it out. It may take some time, may have some growing together.”
Right now, it’s Stephon Castle starting at the point, with rookie Dylan Harper spelling him off the bench.
Both have impressed, but Fox is an elite scorer and a one-time All-Star.
Still, Castle and Harper are filling in nicely.
Harper joined some elite company Monday night when he posted another double-digit scoring game.
Selected second overall in June, the former Rutgers star became just the fourth rookie in franchise history to score double figures in their first four career games when he tallied 11 points in the 121-103 win over Toronto that gave the Spurs a 4-0 record for the first time since 2017.
David Robinson, Willie Anderson and Victor Wembanyama are the others to do it.
Harper also dished out six assists against just a single turnover while backing up Castle, who pumped in 22 points against the Raptors on the strength of 6 of 12 from the floor and 9 of 14 from the free throw line.
The 14 attempts were a career high for last season’s NBA rookie of the year. It came on the same night Victor Wembanyama hit 10 of 10 foul shots to finish with 24 points.
“Team’s been pressuring us, trying to get us out of our sets,” Castle said. “When teams pressure, they’re obviously going to foul a little bit. So, it is super important throughout the course of the game to get there (to the foul line).”
That pressure also leads sometimes to miscues. Castle leads the league in turnovers with 25, but Johnson said he’s not worried about it.
“It’s early in the season and he’s being asked to do a lot right now,” Johnson said. “We also need him to attack and be aggressive and then organize and then execute and then also get your teammate shots. So, it’s a lot at times. There will be a few car crashes or a few times where you lose the ball. We understand that. There’s no high level of concern. He’s answering the call. And I think he’s very adamant at times about getting to the paint, which we need. He’s been very impactful at it.”
