Spurs confident Mitch Johnson will put all the pieces together

San Antonio Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson talks to San Antonio Spurs guard Dylan Harper (2) during the NBA game against the Miami Heat at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Thursday, Oct. 30, 2025.
PHOENIX – Dylan Harper isn’t fretting one bit about how Mitch Johnson is going to put all the pieces together once the Spurs’ lengthy injury list is wiped clean.
“We got a lot of pieces right now,” the rookie guard said. “I think he’s figured it out pretty well.”
Harper’s faith in the 38-year-old coach is well founded.
The Spurs (5-0) are off to the best start in franchise history after Johnson used a nine-man rotation in guiding the Spurs to a 107-101 win over Miami on Thursday night. They rank sixth in the NBA in offensive rating (118.9), first in defensive rating (104.4) and first in net rating (plus-14.5) and have done it without the services of point guard De’Aaron Fox (hamstring), forward Jeremy Sochan (wrist), forward/center Kelly Olynyk (heel) and guard Lindy Waters (eye).
Luke Kornet (ankle) has also been in street clothes for the last three games after standing out in the first two outings as star center Victor Wembanyama’s backup.
“It just shows our depth, how scary we could be and how scary we are right now,” Harper said. “Plus, we got them guys coming back.”
But when will they return and what will Johnson do with them?
“I think we’ve seen this and discussed this here for a couple of years now – we won’t be concerned or disappointed with trying to figure out how to play good players together,” Johnson said. “Some of this stuff is going to take time. We’ll figure it out. It may take some time. We may have to do some growing together.”
While the Spurs have offered no timetable for the return of any of the injured players, signs point to at least some of them possibly coming back on this two-game trip out west, which starts Sunday night against Phoenix (2-4) and ends Wednesday against the Los Angeles Lakers.
Fox, Sochan, Olynyk, Kornet and Waters all participated in shootaround Thursday morning. The word coming out of the practice facility was a few players could return on this trip before others return when the Spurs go back to the Frost Bank Center for a back-to-back against Houston and New Orleans beginning Nov. 7.

San Antonio Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan and San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox watch their teammates take on the Brooklyn Nets in the Spurs’ home opener at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Sunday, Oct. 26, 2025. Both players sat out due to injuries.
“Some of them, perhaps,” Johnson said when asked if the injured players would return on the Arizona-California trip.
“They’re trending in the right direction, doing well,” said the coach, adding it’s beneficial to have two days off before facing the Suns and then two more days off between the games in Phoenix and Los Angeles.
“It’s a little unique,” he said of the breaks in the schedule.
Whenever Fox returns, Johnson has to decide what to do with a point guard rotation that currently has Stephon Castle starting while being backed up by Harper and veteran Jordan McLaughlin. One option would be to start Fox, continue to bring Harper and McLaughlin off the bench and play Castle as a wing.
Like Harper, Castle is just excited to have an even deeper team when the injured players return.
“It’s definitely in the back of our minds, but we got to work with the guys we have now,” said Castle, the 2025 NBA Rookie of the Year. “We know we have (injured) guys on the bench that are definitely going to help us in a big way, so it’s about just finding ways to win games now so we will really be rolling once they get back.”
Forward Keldon Johnson agreed.
“Those are huge pieces to our team, but we are still finding a way,” he said. “We definitely can’t wait to have those pieces back because they will complete our team for sure, but we got to continue to stay on the grind and don’t get complacent and continue to know what it takes to win and not settle.”
And continue to have faith that their coach will figure it all out.
“Mitch has been super confident,” guard Devin Vassell said. “He’s been super steady. It’s been great. He’s finding his voice and he’s been keeping us all grounded, so I appreciate him.”
But no matter what happens, injuries are going to happen again, counsels the team’s oldest player, Harrison Barnes. With that in mind, the 33-year-old forward said the Spurs just need to live in the present and not worry about things they can’t control.
“Knock on wood," he said. "We’ve been in that situation before where we’re 98 percent there and then something happens. Let’s just enjoy these moments while we’re here. Yes, we have some guys out. Whenever we get one back, we’ll do something new at that point. The biggest thing for us is we’re not going to use anything as an excuse. If guys are healthy, they’ll play. Whoever is out there, we will do our best to win games.
"We don’t always want to be looking at, what about this or what about that? That robs us of enjoying the moment.”
