3 Takeaways as Spurs’ hot start continues

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) spins around Toronto Raptors forward Scottie Barnes (4) to make a shot during the first quarter at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Monday, Oct. 27, 2025.
Sandro Mamukelashvili returned to the Frost Bank Center with a bittersweet feeling.
“I’m rooting for these guys,” the former Spurs forward turned Toronto Raptor said. “But not today.”
Mamukelashvili left town Monday with mixed emotions as well, as his old team beat his new team 121-103 to continue its unbeaten start to the season.
Victor Wembanyama had 24 points and 15 rebounds and Stephon Castle chipped in 22 as the Spurs improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2017-18.
It marked only the fourth time in franchise history the Spurs have started a season with four consecutive wins.
Harrison Barnes added 18 points and four 3-pointers for the Spurs, who have won three of four games by double digits..
Toronto got 25 points from R.J. Barrett in falling to 1-3.
The Spurs never trailed, bursting out to a 41-29 lead after the first quarter and extending it as high as 22 in the second half.
After the Raptors closed to within 106-98 on a Collin Murray-Boyles 3-pointer with 6:11 remaining, the Spurs held Toronto without a field goal for the next five minutes to bring home the game.
Here are three takeaways from Monday’s victory:
1. Wemby limited to one block – and was absolutely dominant defensively
Wembanyama came close to seeing his career-best blocked-shot streak end. He recorded his one and only swat against a finger-rolling R.J. Barrett with four minutes to play.
That gave Wembanyama a block in 89 consecutive games, snapping a tie with Patrick Ewing for the fourth-longest streak in NBA history.
Even without it, Wembanyama was a defensive menace.
Just ask the Raptors, whose offense became semi-competent each time Wembanyama went to the bench.
With Wembanyama patrolling the paint, the Raptors stayed far, far away from him.
Sometimes Wembanyama’s presence resulted in a short-armed, over-thought shot in the lane. Sometimes it resulted in the Raptors throwing the ball away.
In the end, the Spurs outscored Toronto by 35 points when Wembanyama was on the floor. It was testament to his defensive effort, blocks or no.
2. How Poeltl beget Wembanyama
Jakob Poeltl’s time with the Spurs bookended arguably the most difficult chapter in club history.
He came to San Antonio from Toronto in the 2018 Kawhi Leonard trade. After 4 ½ seasons that includes the end of the Spurs’ playoff streak, Poeltl was traded back to the Raptors in February 2023.
Three months later, the Spurs won the draft lottery that gifted them Wembanyama.
The Poeltl trade, in fact, is one of the reasons Wembanyama is in San Antonio. His jettisoning to Toronto was part of a Spurs overhaul that maximized the Spurs’ odds in the aforementioned Wembanyama lottery.
No disrespect to Poeltl, but the Spurs upgraded at center.
He was no match for Wembanyama on Monday. In the 7-footer’s defense, few defenders in the NBA are.
3. Mamu gets heartwarming welcome-back
The night began with a video tribute to Mamukelashvili, who left for Toronto last summer after three seasons with the Spurs.
A longtime team favorite, Mamukelashvili could hardly get through pregame warmups without having to stop and exchange greetings with a former teammate or familiar face.
“He was obviously a big part of what we’ve done here recently,” Mitch Johnson said. “He was one of the fan favorites, and all the guys in the locker room loved him too.”
Mamukelashvili signed a two-year, $5.5-million contract with the Raptors during the summer in hopes of finding a more reliable role.
He ended his return game to the Frost Bank Center with five points and a pair of assists.
