Stephon Castle has been added to the Spurs’ already lengthy injury list after bruising his right knee in Saturday night’s scrimmage at the Frost Bank Center, a team spokesman said after shootaround Monday morning.
Castle is day to day and has been ruled out for Monday’s preseason opener against the Guangzhou Loong Lions, a professional team from the Chinese Basketball Association. He could also miss Wednesday’s game at Miami and Friday’s home game against Indiana.
The 2024-25 NBA Rookie of the Year suffered the injury in a collision with Victor Wembanyama in the second half. Wembanyama survived the mishap unscathed, but Castle left the court to go to the locker room for treatment.
In addition to Castle, six other players have been ruled out for Monday’s game: De’Aaron Fox (hamstring), rookie Dylan Harper (thumb), Jeremy Sochan (calf), Jordan McLaughlin (hamstring), Kelly Olynyk (heel) and Devin Vassell (healthy scratch). Vassell, however, is expected to suit up for Wednesday’s game.
Harper and Olynyk, whose wife recently had a baby, are recovering from offseason surgeries. Harper and Sochan are trending playing at some point in the preseason.
Fox said last week he has already been ruled out for the season opener at Dallas on Oct. 22.
“We’re not going to do anything that puts him or anybody in harm’s way or to try to rush anything,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “It’s game one, and then you got eighty-one after that, right? At least.”
Johnson said all the players that are sidelined are “trending in the right direction”
“But we’re not going to be hard pressed (to play them in the preseason),” he said. “We know we’ve got a long season ahead of us, so we’re going to take the conservative approach as we always do. But everybody’s trending the right way. Everybody’s on the court and everybody’s getting work in.”
