San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle (5) looks for a way past Sacramento Kings’ forward Drew Eubanks (19) during the first half of an NBA game in San Antonio, Sunday, Nov. 16, 2025. San Antonio beat Sacramento 123-110.
At some point during the 2025-25 season, the Spurs might go into a game with a full and healthy roster.
That’s not going to come any time soon.
Second-year guard Stephon Castle has joined star center Victor Wembanyama on the injured list, which already included rookie guard Dylan Harper.
Castle has been ruled out for the near term with a hip flexor strain suffered in the Spurs’ victory over Sacramento on Sunday.
“We’ll just have to take it day by day,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “It’s not something we hope that’s going to be super long term. We probably have to let it settle and then see where it goes from there.”
The Spurs plan to re-evaluate Castle within the next two weeks. Wembanyama is on the shelf for at least the next two weeks with a left calf strain.
Harper suffered a left calf strain of his own during the Spurs’ loss at Phoenix on Nov. 2 and is slowly ramping up basketball activities, though he could still be weeks away from a return.
“He’ll continue to get more and more live looks and more bodies on the court as time progresses,” Johnson said. “Hopefully he’s back out there with us pretty soon.”
Wembanyama and Castle are the NBA’s past two Rookies of the Year, with Harper aiming to make it three in a row for the Spurs.
Tuesday’s 111-101 victory over Memphis marked the first time since Castle was drafted that the Spurs faced a game with neither he nor Wembanyama available.
Castle appeared in 81 of a potential 82 games last season.
Making matters worse for the Spurs’ beleaguered group of ball-handlers, backup guard Jordan McLaughlin suffered a right hamstring strain in a workout Monday and is also sidelined.
“It seems to be a thing right now,” Johnson said of the injury bug.
The nature of the recovery process makes it difficult to pinpoint a return-to-play timetable for any of the Spurs’ injured players, Johnson said.
“When you start talking about muscles and soft tissue,” Johnson said, “you have to work and then see how your body responds and then work a little bit more and see how your body responds.
“I’d be silly to try to sit here and predict how all these guys are going to respond to all the different things they have going on.”
Olynyk fitting in with second unit
Wembanyama’s absence the past two games resulted in an uptick in minutes for backup center Kelly Olynyk.
Acquired in a trade with Washington before the start of the season, the 34-year-old Olynyk had appeared in only three games before Sunday’s win over the Kings.
In the past two games, Olynyk has topped 18 minutes in each of the past two contests, totaling 15 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists between them.
“We were joking today he’s going to be the second-string point guard,” forward Harrison Barnes said. “You just kind of give him the ball and he finds a way to make something happen.”
A Hawks’ loss is Spurs’ gain
Thursday’s game against Atlanta comes with added stakes for the Spurs.
Thanks to the 2022 Dejounte Murray trade, the Spurs own the right to swap first-round draft slots with the Hawks next summer. Every Atlanta loss makes that pick a little more attractive to the Spurs.
If the season ended today, the Spurs would move up from 25th to 18th.
The Spurs used a first-round pick acquired from Atlanta in the Murray deal to select Carter Bryant at No. 14 last summer. They are due another unprotected first-round pick from the Hawks in 2027.
Murray has since been flipped to New Orleans, where he is recovering from an Achilles tendon rupture.
