Spurs’ Dylan Harper suffers thumb injury, to miss training camp
Dylan Harper talks to media at the 2025 NBA basketball Draft Combine in Chicago, Wednesday, May 14, 2025. The Spurs’ No. 2 overall pick in June’s draft, Harper suffered a thumb injury in an offseason workout Wednesday and underwent surgery Friday to repair the injury. The Spurs have offered no timetable for his return, but he is not expected to play in the preseason.
All along, the road to an NBA floor has felt like a predetermined destiny for Spurs rookie Dylan Harper.
As the son of a famous five-time league champion, Harper always had a clear and ever present path set out for himself.
That journey hit its first significant obstacle Friday, as Harper underwent surgery for a left thumb injury likely to keep him out for all of his first NBA training camp.
Harper, 19, suffered a partial tear of the collateral ligament in his left thumb during an offseason workout at the Spurs’ practice facility on Wednesday. Two days later, Harper’s all-important shooting hand went under the knife, putting his official NBA debut in limbo.
The team announced Harper’s injury and successful surgery in a news release.
A former Rutgers standout and son of NBA legend Ron Harper, the 6-foot-6 Harper became one of the most highly anticipated incoming rookies in Spurs history last June when the team selected him No. 2 in the draft.
Only three players in club annals came from a higher draft slot — the team’s all-time trio of No. 1 overall picks in David Robinson, Tim Duncan and Victor Wembanyama.
A New Jersey native, Harper averaged 19.9 points in 19 games as a freshman at Rutgers before entering the NBA draft pool. He graded as the consensus second-best prospect behind Duke’s Cooper Flagg, who went first overall to Dallas.
Harper was, and still is, expected to join Wembanyama and reigning NBA Rookie of Year Stephon Castle as part of one of the most exciting young cores in the league.
The start of that partnership might have to wait.
The Spurs have offered no official timetable for Harper’s recovery.
According a source familiar with the rehabilitation plan, Harper is unlikely to play during the preseason. The team has not ruled out the possibility Harper might be cleared in time for the Oct. 22 regular-season opener at Dallas, if not long thereafter.
