PORTLAND, Ore. – Spurs guard Dylan Harper is ready to resume his stirring rookie season.
Having missed 10 games with a left calf strain, Harper is cleared to return in Wednesday night’s game against Portland at the Moda Center.
“As a competitor, you never want to sit out and miss games,” Harper told the Express-News after the team’s walkthrough Wednesday morning. “But sometimes you’ve got to do things you don’t like. The long run is what we’re looking at.”
The No. 2 pick in the NBA draft, Harper was off to a sizzling start, averaging 14 points, four rebounds and 3.8 assists off the bench in his first six games.
He left a Nov. 2 defeat at Phoenix in the first half after pulling up lame while trying to block a shot from the Suns’ Nick Richards.
The pain Harper felt in his calf came out of nowhere, he said.
“I was shocked," the 19-year-old Harper said. “I didn’t know what happened. I didn’t know what was going on.”
Confusion soon gave way to fear for the worst. Many onlookers – including Harper himself – worried he might have injured his Achilles tendon.
Nobody associated with the Spurs breathed easily until the next day, when an MRI confirmed “only” a calf strain.
“When you get hurt, you get those thoughts of ‘What if it’s the worst case scenario?’ " Harper said. "When they told me what it was, I was was like, ‘OK, I feel a little better now.’ "
Harper was in a walking boot for about a week, then began a rehabilitation program.
“Just a lot of lifting and treatment, getting my body right, getting back in shape,” Harper said. “It’s a lot of getting used to a lot of new things.”
Harper has been diligent and patient in preparing for his return. Wednesday night in Portland, he is ready for that to pay off.
